Hi everybody,

Just popped over from Freel2.com to ask a question about the above engine.
Pal of mine has just purchased a 30 foot+ motor launch which at present is powered by a
GMC 7.4 litre big block petrol engine which has 320 bhp BUT only does approx. 2 nautical
miles to the gallon.

It has been suggested that the Range Rover TDV V8 4.4 twin turbo diesel may be a suitable
replacement but the overall dimensions are critical, due to the size of the engine compartment
and we cannot find any info on Google.

So the purpose of this post is to ask if any members on here can help us with the overall
dimensions of the Land Rover engine.

Many thanks in advance for your help and also if anyone knows of an engine which is available
or a reliable source to purchase on that also would be much appreciated.

I can't help with the dimensions of the 4.4....but

What I can do is tell you 100% that the GM big block diesel will fit as I did this on a Mastercraft Maristar, a 28 foot day/ski/recreation boat. This model was mid engined and a good snug fit under its cover. The diesel went in without a lot of drama to be honest and it was a huge improvement in both fuel economy and low down grunt when pulling a skier out of a deep water start.

I think also you would have a degree of difficulty in marinising the LR 4.4 unit as it hasn't (to my knowledge) been done before. Think about manifolds and cooling for the block. It would cost a fortune to have someone make a kit for it whereas the GM diesels are already well established as marine units.

The existing big Block petrol motor is connected to a Z drive so we are aware of this route.
However she is now only to be used for professional inshore fishing so we do not need out and out performance so
hence the suggestion of the 4.4.
Also according to the owner there is a marinising kit available for the 4.4, hence the question.
