locking diff / axle fluid.

Good morning Gents,

On my oil service sheet from land rover it has the " locking differential fluid " listed under 75k or 5 years and the next item on the list is "renew front and rear axle fluid " every 10 years or 150k. ..

Is the locking diff is and axle fluid not the same thing ? Car is a 3.6 tdv8 2010.

Thank MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand

Woodchopper

From the Manual (ie I do not validate that this is correct information, but I do remember my indie having to order this lube for mine with the ETM rear diff fitted)

"If you have the optional Rear Electronic Diff, the fluid appears to be different from the standard Mechanical Open Diff system"

Rear Drive Axle/Differential -

Lubricants - Item- Specification*- Recommended lubricants:

'Open' unit = Castrol SAF-XO - 75W/90

Electronic torque managed (ETM) unit = Castrol SAF Carbon Mod Plus

Thanks for the information Paul. I assume if I have adaptive terrain control , that I have the electronic differential that you are referring to ?

Many thanks MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand

Not sure WC...

I knew i had it because the dealer told me and its on the build sheet for my car. I know it comes up as a green open padlock symbol over the the rear diff in normal driving (when you view the off road screen) which turns to an amber locked padlock when the rear diff locks in slippery situations.

Don't know if there's any other way of knowing you have it? GONE 2010 Facelifted 3.6 TDV8 - Stornoway Grey + 22" Overfinch Olympus

I'm waiting to go back to the dealers for the upper tailgate replaced. I'll find our then if terrain response equals electronic diff. I think it must as how else would terrain response work? MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand

If you go to the 4X4 screen and dial in rock crawl on the terrain response do you get two open padlock symbols ? one over the centre diff and one over the rear diff . this will tell you if the diff is open or closed and for the rear one if it the e-diff is fitted. 2008 MY Supercharged

If you look at the rear diff you will see some wires going to it if it is a locking diff.

WC...TR also adjusts the suspension height and throttle response for a given dialled in surface / terrain...

so you can have TR without the ETM diff AFAIK with the ETM diff just being an optional extra feature. As Axle said, stick it in rock crawl or mud ruts and the padlocks should appear...if there's a padlock symbol over the rear diff, you have an ETM diff fitted.

For what it's worth here in Australia we have Land Rover after Land Rover with eLocking diffs failing.
Workshops have worked out that the failures are due to 2 factors -

1. Factory over tightening the preload on the diff carrier bearings
2. The use by the LR factory of Castrol SAF Carbon Mod +

The symptoms are diff whine noise that gradually gets worse and worse till so loud that its almost as loud as the horn.
The solution is to drain the special (and very expensive) Castrol SAF CM+ oil and replace with standard diff oil (90W/140) or similar.
If this is done early enough in the vehicles life then no further diff noise presents and the eLocking diff will have a long and happy life.

I can report that we followed this advice after very loud diff whine and saved the eLocking diff before it was too late. 1989 RRC with GMC 6.5td

Given the reoccurring problems FFRRs seem to be facing with heavily contaminated rear diff oil, I'd personally be looking to change it every 12 months with a rear locker...
