Battery flat/drained

Chaps,

The battery was flat as a pancake this morning on our V8 - nothing left on, all seemed as usual.

Gave it a jump start and it roared into life as usual, half a hour run and it seemed to be fine, started on the button. Left it about 3 hours and dead as a door nail.

The battery light (on the battery itself) is green and the alternator shows 14v charging at idle.

I've kept an eye on the car and it seems to be going to sleep okay (the light on the gear shift indicator goes out)

So far I've left it another 3 hours but it seems to be starting fine again.

My first instinct is the battery, but the light it green. Has anyone experieced a dead battery but it still shows green?

(If it goes flat again I can check it)

What are the thoughts from the collective?

4.4 BMW V8

Thanks!!

I think you should trust your instincts. Wink

There has been a noticable drop in temperature in recent days - this usually eeks the last life out of batteries which are past their best (this is third or fourth post regarding flat batteries in as many days)

I don't think the green light on your charger is the best way of checking the battery condition.

Do you know how old the current battery is? - 4 -5 years is usually all they are good for.

If you are sure there isn't a drain from your battery when the car is left to its own devices, and your alternator is working okay (if it is keeping a charge whilst being driven, it should be fine) then I would get it replaced before you get stuck. Thumbs Up Winter is nearly here Sad

like DELAMO says now that temperatures are starting to go down ,this is the time when problems will show..the FFRR takes a lot of power when it does its ECU checks when the ignition is on as i have found out when mine went flat...may i suggest 'europarts' for a bosch [varta badged] 110ah,920 crank battery at £119... ... - .- -.

It could well be temperature related, it dropped to 4 degrees this morning.

Just been out now and all is fine, started on the button - with luck it'll be cold again tonight and I can test it in the morning. A dead battery would be a relief and an easy fix.

Also, I've just put a digi MM on the battery and it's showing 12v - possibly a little on the low side. (14 when charging)

Thanks for the tip, is there a type number I can ask for on the new battery? (I think this could be an orginal as it's marked as Land Rover, could be from a dealer though)
