steering rack replacement ?

Hi, just had my 05/06 rr 4,2 sc in for its service at a local independent, i asked them to investigate a slight wobble on the steering post 50mph, they said it was wear on the steering rack, and a new one was £1800, i have looked one bay for recon units, is this a big job or a straightforward swap ? thanks,Jamie jamie

Check the connection of the steering column lower universal joint to the splined connection on the rack is tightened up properly first , as this is a common reason for steering wheel play.

On the steering rack replacement, if done 'by the book' it is a pretty time consuming job, requires the engine mounts disconnected and the engine lifted to give the room to get the rack out.

However, a good indy (or good main dealer) can remove the old rack and fit the replacement without the hassle by taking the tie ends of the rack, jiggling out the old rack and fitting the replacement rack in sections.

If you get a second hand rack of the fleabay, it can be a good idea to fit new cooler pipes, tie rod ends, track rod ends, tie rod end boots and servotronic valve prior to fitting. These bits are relatively cheap and will avoid any problems with the second hand rack.

You should be able to get a rack off the fleabay for around £200, so a massive saving on the £1800 cost of a remanufactured unit from the dealers.

My gut intinct would be to get a 2nd opinion before you go further.

Never heard a rack give those symptoms, if the rack is worn it will have play in it, that you can feel at rest.

As the rest say.... get a 2nd opinion and get all the suspension arms and bushes checked... Pete

Would be supprised if it was the rack internals, more likely inner tie rods or one of the suspension bushes, racks aren't cheap but are available second hand, though I would have thought you may be buying as many problems as you have now.

As has been said, check all other possibilities first, before plunging in as you will be really hacked off if it's not the rack when all said and done! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Were all four wheels balanced or just the front two? If the rears were balanced too then swap the fronts & rears around and see if that helps Thumbs Up

do you have standard LR wheels or maybe 22'' aftermarket ones, they could be the reason for the wobble... ... - .- -.

I meant to say in my earlier post that I had a similar problem when I bought the car.

I got 4 new tyres ... some old ones were ok but with winter on way I changed them all ... and the problem was solved.

With all due respect to the garage... If it was as simple as a track rod end! Then I'm sure that would have been diagnosed in a heartbeat Meerbusch...

The question the OP is asking is, "do steering racks fail often?" and you are quite right sir, the balljoints do fail on a regular basis... But to miss a balljoint & diagnose a replacement rack would be inexcusable...

Hence advice above, to exhaust all other options first Thumbs Up
