Seat heater fault?

Ok I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this one. Its a little tricky to pin down but my front seat heaters seem to intermittently turn them selves off.

I have read the owners manual again to see how they should work and it states that the heater are thermostatically controlled to maintain a predetermined temperature. The heaters turn themselves on and off to maintain this temperature but the indicator lights remain illuminated until the heaters are either manually turned off or the the ignition switch is turned off.

Now with mine the indicator lights and the system as a whole turn themselves off intermittently. For example my wife used the car yesterday to drive to Bath, a 50 min journey, and the heaters turned themselves off at least 5 times. We don't use the back seats much so I'm not sure if the rear seat heaters are affected. Also I can't find any reference to this but when I turn the blower speed control knob to off the heat seaters turn off, is this normal behaviour?

Really what I am asking is would some one please explain the operation of the seat heating system for me. For example is the just one control module or two (one front and one back) or is it controlled by the body control module? Is there anything I can look at myself before paying mega bucks for a dealer to tell me he can't find anything...

Thank you in advance

Just having a look now. Mines 06MY but had forgotten that the seats were the same as the none facelift version.

Thanks

OK had a look through RAVE and tried the test mode described. Its say that if no pulses of the LED are observed then no fault is detected and I get no pulses.

I can't think what else to look for as this is intermittent.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I wonder if they shut down if low voltage situation arises.

Personally my seats only get the heaters switched on when its so cold I'd get back ache otherwise... along with the steering wheel which can be painful to handle on those really bitter mornings. Its not got that cold up here in the middlands yet though having spent the last to nights walking the town I can vouch for a layer of frost over the car yesterday morning. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS

I bet your family love you:

"You can only have the heating on when you're wearing so many jumpers you can no longer move"

Seriously, I've had the heated seats and steering wheel on for the last 2 months in the mornings! But then I refuse to wear a jumper or coat in the car as I see it as an extension of my livingroom, although the seats are more comfortable and the sound system is better!

Anyhoo, back on topic...

The system test will only throw up a code if it detects the problem at time of test and from what you've said it's intermittent. I would suggest that you have a broken/shorting element somewhere which is only causing a problem when you move about on the seat. In reality to find/repair this type of problem it's a case of taking the seat apart, although you can bet on it being in the base rather than the back.

Laughing

Its not that bad.. we use the Laguna for the daily school run which does't have leather. I don't go far without clothing for the conditions but thats because of the work I do. My other car is a 1990 110 CSW so even the FFRR with no heating what so ever is positively tropical by comparrison. Infact When I drive to work in the winter in the 110 if I don't catch the traffic lights right then the Sunroof starts to thaw and I get drenched.. Theres only me in the car then though as its stupid O'clock in the morning I just wrap up and open the window to let some heat in / steam from breathing out Laughing

As you say back to the topic... Check the voltages first before pulling seats apart, The 1990 RRC won't allow the heater Windscreen or Rear Window heater to work if the voltage is too low so I'm pretty certain that the FFRR will have a much more clever system built in. The current draw from the heated seats and steering wheel will be very heavy in comparrison to the rest of the cars electrics so it could be the first indication of voltage problems either charge from the alternator or a battery on its way out. Do a search on checking the battery condition and also charge rate and run those tests when its working fine and also when its playing up. It will cost no more than a multimeter to check and could save lots of pulling stuff apart to search out the problem. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS
