I am hopefully going to be selling my P38 to upgrade to a newer FFRR within the next two months, i have a few questions:
1, is this a good time to buy to get a good deal or after the new year
2, would you recommend an approved dealer, private seller or any other motor trade selling one.
3, any specific dealers to stay away from.

Any tips, advice much appreciated

My budget depends on the car: (am a little confused, keep changing my mind after reading different negative comments)
options are:
a) 3.6 tdv8
b) 4.2sv8
c) 4.4tdv8
d) 5.0SC
i would like something from 2008/9 onwards - i guess i am looking at between c20-34K
I plan on keeping the car for probably 5 years and drive maybe 10K miles a year, once a month London to the west midlands rest is really weekend driving around town, ( london)

4, Should i try to p/x my P38 or sell privately? 2.5DHSE 2000
I have had my p38 for 5 years and love it dont know much about mechanics so wouldn't really know what to look for except the basics.

With one post, I assume you are new to the site, so welcome, lot of friendly and very knowledgeable and helpful people on here.

There is a very good buyers guide in the WIKI on here, I suggest you have a good read through that before going to look at anything - I found it very useful when I bought mine. I am mechanically minded (ran defenders for 20 years, doing all my own maintenance and servicing), but these vehicles are a LOT more complicated so it helps to know beforehand what to look out for.

Best advice, take your time, take some test drives, that should help you decide which flavour of engine you want, and then just look round. Try to find one with a good service history - they don't like neglect.

Buying privately is OK - but there are pitfalls, going to a trader or a dealer you at least have some chance of legal redress if it goes wrong.

Going to a main dealer may well be dearer, but depending on what you are buying, you could end up with a useful warranty - remember these cars were £60 - 80k when new, and the repair costs tend to reflect that.

If anything doesn't feel right at any stage, WALK AWAY - there are plenty of others out there. With winter coming up, and the met office saying we could be in for a 2010 style snowy one, prices may well rise a little - everyone wants a 4x4 when the weather isn't so good.

But, above all, find the right one for you, and then enjoy it - I've had mine for 8 months now and still drive round with a stupid grin on my face and don't want to get out of it!!  2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

I bought my first 3.6 TDV8 from an Indy and had it for 3 years, I thought life couldn't get better until I bought a 5L Supercharged from a member on here and boy I still can't believe how quick it is.
I can't see me moving away and I quite like the little foibles they have, having had very boring but reliable company cars - boring  Geoff

I have been a passive user on the site for some time and have read the various threads on the differences- this just confuses me more ( happens easily) all the 4 models have good reviews as well as some negatives, i suppose i was leaning towards the 4.4TDV8 then read about the twin turbo potential issue and the the petrol has ( can have) less issues. so started to look at the 5.0. TBH, i dont really require that much power, am no longer a speed freak, ( although wouldnt say no to it either) i enjoy the RR driving expereince and love the expereince i have had in the P38. I suppose i am looking for a better driving expereince some extra power and refinement in the cabin. According to my maths, a 5.0 would cost an additional £800 per year in fuel- on the mileage i do thats looking at (10 around town and 18 on a run) compared to a 4.4TDV8 on (15 around town and 25 on a run)

But just not sure what may give me more of a hassle free drive over the years from a 3.6 to 5.0 Or should i base it on economics and spend less and go for a 3.6 or 4.2 for now as the price difference can be 10-15K.

Welcome to the site and my top tips of today are :

- Talk to Gary Elliot, our site sponsor, he did a great job for me (since I live abroad, I couldn't do the hard work myself) but most importantly he keeps looking till he finds gems.
- There are a lot of good TDV8s out there that have absolutely no issues but there are a few pitfalls with the turbos/EGRs etc. that can result in high cost issues.
- The SC engines are bullet proof AFAIK
- The ZF 6 speeds in the later cars should be very very reliable by now (the earlier ZF6 speed boxes had a few issues, I know because my 2006 SC had them all) but I'm sure those are well sorted (this particular ZF box sits in a LOT of cars including Bentleys for example).

I absolutely love the 5.0 SC (and am sure the 5.0 NA is also brilliant) and fuel is not a big issue for me. So my recommendation is go for the petrol versions.

Note, initially Gary found a really nice TDV8 for me but when he went looking at it it turned out there was a turbo issue so I decided to step away from that car and go for the 5.0SC that I have now. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Having just bought a TDV8 last week (#noob) I'd say look at and drive plenty. The ones I drove varied wildly and some that looked great on paper (low mileage for example) turned out to be dog rough. The first couple I drove were full of squeaks and rattles too.

I found a nice one at an indie dealer but in the end ruled it out as it was the same price as main dealer cars and yet only had a 3rd party 3 month warranty. From all the scary stories here I put 12 month LR warranty as a priority.

BTW I got 35.6mpg on a 200 mile run home in mine - mix of motorway and A roads, so I'd say you're underestimating the mpg of the 4.4 TDV8.

thanks guys for the all the feedback. I am leaning towards a petrol as the cost of petrol vs diesel isn't a lot on the miles i do. Anybody recommend any good insurance companies, Allianz are coming in at 900.

am still open so any sugestions/pointers happily taken. as longs as i get another rangie, am not too fussed

the SC 4.2 is affordable and there are some nice ones about, as for the insurance, go onto a comparison site as they have special promotional offers to entice new business. ... - .- -.

I went for a 4.2 SC recently as it presented very good value for money.

It's a splendid engine and I am very pleased with the whole package.

It didn't cost much more to insure than my old Landcruiser.

With that low annual mileage it has to be petrol. I've owned a 4.2SC, 3.6TDV8 and presently a 4.4TDV8. I cover 25k motorway miles pa hence the diesel option. The petrol was the smoothest with the best sound. The 5.0SC is a peach if you can stretch that far. MY23 D350 HSE
On my 7th RR plus various other JLR vehicles

I think it will be between the 4.2 vs 5.0 - i plan on keeping the car for say 4 years and ideally want to get it now from a Dealer to buy the additional LR warranty. There dont seem to be many 4.2's at LR dealers.

So far this has been very helpful, i now need to find the best trim in either vehicle for the money.

All 5.0 are autobiography spec. Though this may sound top of the range, and it is, it meant that the cars were more configurable than the lower spec cars such as vogue and vse.

Each needs careful inspection to see exactly what you are getting in terms of options.

The 4.2 however was available in vogue se and ab spec I thinks.(could be wrong tho) There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

You can buy a Land Rover warranty on any used FF up to 10years 100,000 miles AFAIK, you don't have to buy it from them...
