4.2 SC v 5.0 SC -how much of a difference?

Been looking around and for £18k you can buy a 2007 4.2 but for a 59 plate 5.0SC you need £30k. Only 2 years younger but a lot more....are they worth it, or will prices of the 5.0SC align with those of the 4.2 soon?

you'll be happy with a 4.2...i have one and i'm very pleased with it....
the 5.0 is an attractive motor with more bhp ,newer front end and the digital dash but its a extra chunk of money to have one over the 4.2.. ... - .- -.

Like Stan, I also have the 4.2 and love it.

For me and the usage I have out of my SC, the main element is the engine performance difference. I had my supercharger pulley upgraded and a subtle remap done to enhance what was already a good engine.

I now have drastically improved throttle response at the bottom end and even more torque. Yes, I know this STILL isn't a match for a 5.0 but it does attempt to redress the balance for 'not a lot' compared to the relative chasm the 5.0 commands over the 4.2 in purchase price.

A standard 4.2, bereft of flaps and steps is also a beautiful thing to behold. THE best iteration of the L322 in my opinion.

I'm not saying that a 5.0 isn't undesirable. It is hugely appealing. Massively so, in fact. But the 4.2 is a relative bargain by comparison and shouldn't be considered the poorer descendant in any way.

If, like me, you don't use the radio and are nonplussed by the additional instrumentation functions or the added refinement and chassis ability, then buy a 4.2 with confidence and sprinkle a little fairy dust over one. You won't regret it. Si. <This is my name.

I've just changed from a 3.6 Diesel to a 5L Supercharged both are great, the Petrol is more UTD in the instrument department but I do have to visit the petrol station much more often but I now win all the Grand Prix starts at the lights Twisted Evil

I actually drive them much the same, adhering to the speed limits etc and both make really comfortable cruisers as I am sure the 4.2 does as well, my only caveat on both the petrols is that if you want a "sports car" you should buy a "sports car" because although they perform (and boy do they perform) the handling is exactly what you would expect from a 2.5T brick - not the best. Geoff

The things that really make the difference between a 4.2 & a 5.0sc for me were in no particular order:
Adaptive Cruise Control
High Beam Assist
Blind Spot Monitoring
Adaptive Suspension (notably better body control).
Better InCar Media/Smart Phone compatibility (not perfect mind you).
The shear grunt available!
Keyless start.
Improved user configuration options re locking, light delays etc without the need to use any external gizmos (IID tool etc)

Whether these are worth the difference is up to you, for me they did. Should've been old enough to know better...doh!

If the price difference isn't a big issue for you, the 5.0 is just heaps better/nicer to have/drive/own. My 4.2 was well sorted in the end and a brilliant car really but the 5.0 feels soooooooooooo much better, nicer to look at etc. etc.

You are also buying a newer car (well depending on what years you were considering).

Also the gearbox on the 5.0 should be better (it is upgraded and I'm convinced that ZF has sorted the issues with the earlier box even though it is a great box to start with).

I wouldn't go back to a 4.2 unless I couldn't buy a 5.0. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I have a 4.2 that I bought a year ago for 14500 with 84k on the clock and have looked at the 5.0 but can't justify the uplift in cash - I own my cars as an individual not through my business - its not that I don't have the cash its just a huge amount of money as a differential. The 4.2 is a very good car I have an xkr as well yet now drive the ff all the time ( 26k this year ) so will probably buy a 5.0 in another year - the 4.2 is still a very very good vehicle for the cost Thumbs Up

Have you driven both the 4.2 & the 5.0?

I haven't and for good reason. You don't miss what you've not had! Very Happy

The 4.2 is brilliant and no matter what you've driven before, I'd be surprised if you would be disappointed with the 4.2.

If not buying the latest shape RR, my own preference would be to do the external cosmetic 2010MY onwards 'facelift' as an alternative to 'upgrading' and buying the 5.0 because the one we've got, is the best 4x4 we've had.

The Master Technician at our main dealer advised me not to get rid of our 4.2 because if looked after properly they're awesome cars. However, he did add that from a performance perspective, in his opinion the 5.0 is in a different league because it just keeps on going and going (top end).

For a 4x4, the 4.2 has all the power I can think we would ever need and the drive is like velvet.

Based on our own experience, I wouldn't entertain one without a proper warranty though and -a cliche but - I'd buy the best kept car with the most comprehensively documented history... but you'll still need to be prepared to budget for proper maintenance as they're not cheap to run.

As Bellini says, if you buy the right car with your eyes wide open to the real life running costs of a RR, you won't regret it.

Excellent cars though, all of them!

I'm very happy with the older model. Actually, mine's the nonSC and it still has tons of power. Very Happy The newer one is definitely better, but the prices you quoted were almost double. I don't think it's TWICE as good.

However, if you like the 5.0 and don't mind the price of admission, go for it! You need to find s car you'll love driving because you'll remember that long after you've forgotten what you paid.

Some of these 5.0sc are £35k for a 59 plate - that's 5 years old, and not even the current model. Hence why I am wondering if a 57plate 4.2sc for £16-18k is a safer bet without sacrificing much.....

Your above statement is what I would think and do. The price next year I think will be more like £25k for them as the new model drops even more in price. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

If you've got a 4.2, surely the prospect of paying in the region of £10 to £15k more for a 5.0 isn't justifiable (not a statement but a question)?

I can't remember the phrase but its something like the joy of ownership remains long after the price is forgotten. Its true, I only bought mine a couple of weeks ago and the bank account has recovered (well almost) and the joy I get from driving the car remains and I suspect will remain for a while longer. Geoff
