It's not that bad to remove, I made a tool to do it, took all of 10mins to make and then 2 mins to get the fan off...

It's going begging if anyone wants to borrow it....

Not pretty but I wasn't going for aesthetics....

On my TD6, the fan would engage in the slightest traffic queue and would then always stay on until you revved it past about 4k RPM. The woosh it made was something else, I can still remember one pedestrian (young foreign student) literally hitting the decks and adopting the brace position as he didn't know what was going on......people would literally stock in their tracks to see what approaching.....  2006 4.2 SC

FFRR AJV8 Hidden somewhere on the back of the engine. One hour to remove ("book time").

This is called progress.

Further progress would not having to replace alternators on both Rovers in a little over a year.

Morning guys.
I did the alternator yesterday. I had to do job outside as no room in my garage . It was wet and at times miserable.

Maybe I am just very slow but from start to finish I was nearly 5 hours. The weather didn't help having to lie in puddles to remove bottom engine cover and radiator cowling.

I used a huge shifter to remove viscous fan. It took me a wee bit to get this on the nut in a position that I could hit it with a hammer. Maybe I was lucky but one hard strike did the job. I was then able to unscrew the fan and remove radiator cowling. I then had to disconnect the twin radiator hose and top radiator hose. I used a 24mm socket attached to a long bar to release the belt tensioner. Then belt off. Then its easy to remove the alternator top bolt. The bottom bolt is covered by a pulley. You remove this with an allen key. Once that is removed you can see the alternator bottom bolt. When you loosen this bolt another pulley and a boomerang shaped bracket come away. You can then remove alternator. Mine was stuck hard so I had to use a bar to unloosen it. The next issue is getting it out the engine bay. I had to remove the large aluminium fuel cooler pipe so I could get out. Once this was done the fitting was straight forward. Everything in reverse. I have popeye arms so I find it quite difficult to get my arms and hands between cowling and viscous fan. This as a pest. I cant believe that BMW/Landrover could not have come up with a better way to design an engine. I did try to take some photographs of this procedure but having looked at them they are not worth posting. Thanks to all who gave me advice.I did look at various posts on you tube etc which although were not the same engine did give a good bit of advice.

Well done for struggling through the weather.

I have left the lower cover / tray off for the moment - I have a few jobs to get in there (eg new belts) and it is a pain to keep removing with so many fixings. Will be replacing before real bad weather hits. Howard
