That will take a while to try and source, I dont doubt RRPhil has tried but we work pretty closely with some electronics companies. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

What happened to gyrogypsie's solution, I did not realise someone had got so far with this. I wondered along the lines of reconditioning the potentiometer itself. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

I have a spare armature & brush assembly but not a spare potentiometer I’m afraid. I gave my spare potentiometers to Gyrogypsy to help him spec. the replacement unit that he is working on. I haven’t heard back from him regarding progress with this for a while now.

It’s worth running the motor on a bench to see if you can clean up the potentiometer wiper contacts to rejuvenate the thing.

I managed to find a local breakers with a second hand motor today for £250. I fitted it in about ten mins with just 3 10mm bolts and one electrical connector to remove.

I did the procedure outlined by Phil (thanks again) & it worked first time. The trans fail safe didn't need to be cleared either, I've done 20 miles in it today and it's working well. Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread but...

Mine's been flashing up the "failsafe prog" message for a week or three now. Sometimes it would just vanish completely. Then It came on, and fixed itself in low range. Had to drive back from Liverpool last week at 48 mph in low range... Crying or Very sad

Odd thing was that the gear selector display on the dash at one point was flashing between 5 and D backwards and forwards. Occasionally it would flash up "select neutral" as if I'd put fuse 39 in, whilst I was driving! Sounds to me like an electrical problem...

I've also had the transfer neutral message flash up.

Bloody thing won' t come out of low range.

I've been reading *lots* of posts on various forums and decided to have a look today as the weather's fine. Took the motor off and it all spins fine, tested the resistance and it seems there are a few spikes/drops so that points to a duff pot.

However.....

What I find really weird is that, (and I've tried the reset procedure) when I switch on, select neutral and flick the range selector switch, there's a high pitched tone, followed by a dull clunk. It's as if the motor can't move what it's supposed to. The it flashes p again about failsafe mode.

I'm wondering if my transfer box is stuck? It was fine in high range before all this malarky!

I've also read about the battery being a potential problem so hacve mine on charge... see if that makes a difference. Tym

Hi Tim,

For the transfer box motor, its a ten minute job to remove it and a 15 minute job to clean it and test it. I found this u tube video very helpful and all you need is a meter!



On mine it was sticking and I cleaned my armature and it has always worked great since then.

The flashing between 5 and D is odd as that would suggest that it is going from manual to auto mode somehow. I'd have a look at the connectors that are under your gear selector switch as well as the reference ring on your main gearbox. The cover for around your gear selector just clicks up from the back. The reference ring on your gearbox that tells the car what the gear selector has chosen. Perhaps that is getting worn or is not connected or located correctly. The connector is down the back of the engine at the top where it meets the gearbox...bit of a stretch to get to but worth opening and closing again to make sure it does not have a bad contact.

Other than that, worth getting some diagnostics on it!

I've taken it off twice now... Smile once to test it, and the second time to wind the TB manually into high range.

Whist it *did* settle for a very short time, I'm now getting fail safe mode virtually all the time. Going to check the wiring on the hi/low switch etc, but from the test I did on the TBM, I think it needs replacing.

The worrying thing is I've occasionally got a transmission overheating warning, then it settles next time I start up...

Just bought a new 3 tonne jack to be able to lift the car! Tym

Hi,
since people looking to fix their transfer case shift motors will be finding this thread through google, I just wanted to point out that there's some progress with the potentiometer issue.
There seems to be very similar part available from GM, but it has not been tested yet, so we do not know whether it's compatible. The details are in the rangerovers.net thread linked earlier.

I'm tempted to take mine out, drill a small hole it in, fill it with WD40, spin it round for a while then drain it and seal the hole up again... Question


BTW, a replacement transmission ECU didn't do anything... so I have a spare one here if anyone needs it! Whistle Tym
