Newbie on here with a gearbox issue

TDV8 2009 vogue with approx 50 000 miles. Gearbox started to need a manual change form 4th upwards so I took to the dealer and under warranty the gearbox was changed!!! However..... I found this did not cure the problem and returned the car for further investigation. The garage phoned me to say the problem was that mine had overfinch 22 inch wheels on and that the car worked fine with the std 19 inchers. As I bought the car second hand with these wheels I was a little surprised but since I had a 'spare set of 19 inchers I replaced them and lo... the gearbox works. however why as the circumference is the same and it did 25 000 miles with them on before. Another issue seems to be a harsh vibration on medium acceleration (perhaps from the propshaft).
Totally confused by this and the reluctance of the gearbox to roll on my overfinch wheels.

on the overfinch ones it has 3 toyo proxes 285/35/22 ( I think thats the size as I'm not near the car right now). the fourth is a same size tyre of onknown make, possibly chinese as it was bought in a rush following a puncture. Another thing confusing me is that I have in the past popped on one of the 19 inch originals on in lieu of a spare

I would be very very surprised that the wheels would have anything to do with the gearbox issues even though it goes away when you are rolling on 19 inchers. I wonder if it makes a difference if the CCF file is updated with the correct wheels !! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

The transmission controller has a ‘curve recognition mode’ which is designed to inhibit upshifts while the vehicle is cornering (for stability) and it kicks in if there’s a speed difference detected of more than 1 km/h between the front wheels. If you have the odd tyre on the front it might be worth swapping it to the rear?

Hmm... Yes the odd tyre although the same size was on the front. I will try to sort this weekend and let you know

If you want to look after your transmission never run with different tyres and / or large differences of tread on the same axle and if you can help it try and keep it all "same" on all four corners.

If you think about it, different tyres have different wall strengths, rolling resistance, overall diameter etc etc and the FFRR monitors all this and is trying very hard to work out what the hell is going on! At motorway speeds the diffs are constantly having to allow catch up of one or more wheel whilst not assuming a wheel is "slipping".

If you want to try out how big the issue is buy an old japanese 4x4, put worn tyres on the front and new ones on the back, lock it into 4wd and drive down the motorway. The bang as the transmission self destructs is impressive.
