On the existing system as pictured, you have 2 phono inputs in the AV panel at the back of the centre console, (a bit i am currently still missing) and can select either one as well as TV as a Video input seperately on each side. So you can add what you like really, Media player, games console, another more generic DVD player, PC output. Be fun trying stuff out.

Can't be letting Colin have all the fun though. Here's a couple of pics of my upgrade. As mine too was an MID (non Nav) vehicle, before adding the PC/touch screen/etc, I first had to make the base system work. This meant installing wiring and components for the OEM I-Bus nav + the wiring for the future (pc) components.

Even with the older system, buying new components/wiring was prohibitively expensive so my purchasing went the same way Colin's did: internet, a friendly dealer, and the bay. Finding the components was not difficult but Range Rover harnesses are generally not available. Since the systems were standardized by BMW and I was going to be adding wiring anyway, the easiest and least expensive route was to pick up a BMW harness and modify it to fit the RR and suit my needs. I got a harness from an E46 with DSP - so better sound and a sub were added into the overall picture as well.

First thing to do was to trial fit the harness to determine where it needed to be modified. So the RR came apart and in went all the components.


I do have to say that I was just as impressed on dissecting the RR as when first driving an LM. I worked on cars (mainly MB, BMW, and Porsche) professionally for about 12 years while going to high school and university. I've taken apart a lot of vehicles (including Rolls and Bentley). None were like the LM. The fit of the interior parts is impeccable. Most impressive, though, is the weight of the pieces. Even the smallest cover has dampening material on the back - and I thought I was going to keel over when lifting out the back seat. Unreal. It is no wonder driving an LM is so supple.

Here's the harness in mid work with tags noting what needed to be done.

Despite the very different sizes of the vehicles, there was surprisingly little that needed to be changed. After about 3 1/2 hrs of work the harness was done including the addition of USB and several addtl shielded cables front to rear.

So then it was off to the car to see if everything worked before burying the harness.




So today I have to button everything back up.

Items that remain to be done in the future are:
- recoding the nav computer
- modifying my second head unit for touch screen
- configuring the PC - still a lot to decide on
- finishing the phone integration in the consloe
- possibly reworking the MY10 steering wheel switches.
These are actually the more time consuming tasks, though... :cry:

Even the detail like seeing your light switch plugged back in, i wonder how many others would so instanly appreciate why

Yea the programming especially will be a bit, but totally do able. I guess you appreciate why i did all mine on the bench.
Mind you while i can program up all the new bits on the bench, i will still have to program all the old bits that will still be there, like the Ipack, so they will work with the new system correctly.

BTW, You did not mention if it actually worked or not

I see in the Ipack that there is an I-BUS members list, i dunno if thats going to need adding to, but for sure the head type is a setting in most ECU's

I see you also incorporated some car PC intergration wiring at the same time. Very sensible

Yeah, it works. That was the reason for the smiley following the 2 shots of the monitor (full sunlight - hard to take pics of a monitor). I did have trouble with a dodgy connector/cable to the GPS antenna - but that was BMW not me. I only had the nav and radio up and running for the test, but since I lengthened the cables to the monitor, that's what I was worried about.

As to the light switch, I think most would have trouble identifying it as that... JK

I don't have the pics off the camera yet to show the touch screen and second monitor. Then again, all I've done to now is take the touch screen apart to check the size of the actual screen as it's a 7". Now have to dissect the monitor and check to see if mounting the screen is at all feasible. Have to get the car back together first, though. We're driving up to Cologne on Sun. and the car still looks just like in the first pics...

Well it's mainly finished in respect of the Preparation and bench test stages, although i do stiill have a couple of bits to play with a little more yet, got the TSD to bits and I am trying to get my Venture Cam dock module connected and showing some signs of life. I also wanna check out my sub woofer, as i think it's Amp might be suspect and i need to order a fuse box.

I also have other pressing matters and unfinished stuff like the steering wheels control project,

And then i can start with the Car, i am thinking to shove it all in the Boot first and add the signal connections to the IBUS and CAN and so on to see if that all interfaces ok.

hi Colin, that's the one...i was blinded by the excitement of your site and the possibility of adding more bits, that's what you call a proper project. i have a full set off the 2009/10 cameras with the module, 2x mirror cams front and rear bumper cam if any use to you but i think you have already said they are on the new can bus system but the offer is there..when you get round to doing the vc i would like to know if it needs the cam bus connected to show any signs of life as i wired my one up as to the pin out 12v + and ground but it still showed no signs of life, didn't charge the cam unit..
with regards to the YWC500422, would these only be fitted to the early face lift's 05's or so when they were a mixture of bmw and ford V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

Daveo, i have finally got some signs of life from my Venture CAM dock unit, albeit only after having swapped out a few components and only diagnostically, but it is a very good start.

Very switched on and astute of you to note the possible ramifications of my project.
Towards the end of my project i will publish the actual costings involved for me to do this, but i am already sure it will be low enough to make it quite viable over the cost of changing vehicle.

Even for those already owning an 05 on vehicle, i hope to provide sufficient detail and technical information as to how these can also be upgraded as desired.

hi Colin, sounds good, did it need a signal from the can bus or the monitor as when i connected my one with 12v and neg it still had no signs of life, i thought it would at least charge the camera...i am waiting to hear if he finds the gateway unit..just of to have an update on your site..

Nah i have not got it to "switch on' and start charging yet.
Just got it to respond to our diagnostic equipment and report settings and fault codes etc.

It seems to be flash programmable, which is great, however, as ever, we seem to always be trying to make up for and accommodate errors and stupidities in the dealers OEM diagnostic equipment and this seems no exception.

Although well known to be fitted in 2005 MY and shown on Microcat etc, with a dealer IDS, the venture cam or RDUM (Remote Driver Utility Module) as their own acronyms call it, is simply not listed as a fitted item.
It's not even listed as an optional item, let alone mandatory.

If any LR IDS technician / developer is reading this, please feel free to ask me what you need to do to fix this in your own file system if you are not sure

In the meantime, no one with a 2005 MY L322 can go to a dealer and have faults read, cleared or their Venture Cam dock module flash programmed.

We can of course sort this out ourselves and flash program my own Venture CAM dock module to 2005 spec software which may cause it to look to the gateway ECU for over CAN Ign on info as opposed to the not present in 05 Spec instrument pack, but i believe that this will still not result in a switching on CAM dock unit until it is actually tapped into an I-BUS or BMW CAN BUS.

I therefore won't even bother until i have the entire infotainment ECU set sitting in my boot and wired to such input sources. 2003 4.4 HSE

Colin - I've read this very interesting thread in some detail, and see that you are planning to fit a reversing camera as part of your installation. Please can you answer me a couple of simple questions - I also want to fit a reversing camera to my 2005 L322. I have a really good quality, wide field of view, low light camera, I want to connect it to my (Denso) touch screen head unit.

I understand from other posts in various places that there is a connector in the head unit that is specifically for a rear view camera. I have a MSV-2 system from yourself so I can edit the gateway CCF file for 'reversing camera fitted'.

What I need to know is:

1) Is the video input to the Denso unit 'composite video' and therefore any camera will do. Or is it some sort of digital protocol so that only the pukka RR camera can be fitted?
2) What sort of connection is it on the rear of the Denso unit. Is this a plug that is commercially available?
3) Do I need to do anything else to enable auto changeover to the reversing camera when reverse gear is selected.

Hoping for a good news answer!
