Hi,

My battery charge light is coming on now and then.
might come on for a few minutes then go's out.
It's a 56 plate TDV8 with 53,000 miles

Any ideas.

belt needs adjusting or changing, or maybe alternator has a developing fault.

No light this morning

TDV8's of that vintage seem to have fragile alternators - lots of failures reported - read this thread

If the light persists, I'd get it replaced, because if it fails, you're stuck wherever you happen to be - and these things never happen at convenient times.....

Mine came on, replaced the Alternator and also the battery (under warranty). No problems since and also the issues around not starting after being left for a while seem to have gone. Not been brave enough to try the FBH though  Geoff

Finally did mine earlier this year after a non starting issue at christmas, no noise or whining, just not quite putting out enough juice.

I got mine from car parts 4 less and got a local mechanic to change it, aparently it is doable on your drive just, but he only charged me a few hours labour at a decent rate..... So was much easier.

Get it swapped. If you need more convincing have a look at the output at the battery terminals, have a search on here for what it should be think its 14.2v👍 There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

so, i left aberdeen this afternoon. The light came on after 5 miles. I accessed the diagnostics page. The volts read 12.5 - 13 all the way (120 miles)
it's now gone off and it's still reading 12.5 - 13 volts.
It's a fairly new battery but i wouldn't expect it to last 2 hours though

any ideas

Your alternator should be giving out more than 12.5-13V.
A battery will run a car for a number of hours before running down as long as you don't have any heavy current use items on eg headlights, wipers etc.
Looks to me as though your alternator is just giving out enough at the moment to keep things going. It's possible the charge light has gone out as the battery voltage is starting to reduce ie the alternator voltage is still sufficiently high to keep the charge light off.
For whatever reason the alternator is not giving output voltage. Could be as simple (and cheap) as a bad connection but I'm inclined to think your alternator is on it's way out, this would be consistent with the age of your car and the experiences of others.
I would recommend getting your car to an auto electrician asap to have the alternator checked.
Just don't go out in the rain and the dark in it.
