Apparently the intermittent engine light is my EGR valves need replacing.. not closing when they should?
Been quoted £1000... ouch!

Can you remove or block them on this engine or is there a way to make them work again without paying that amount! ???

I have seen via old google that you can delete them altogether so there are no codes and they stay shut!?

They can be mapped out, with the appropriate software

Yup, I got a Viezu v-box for my s class and they mapped out the egr. You get two maps and a code reader for £400ish

Sounds quite steep!

I saw some egr cleaner in halfords the other day, wonder if that would help. Not used it myself, but the theory sounds ok, spray it into the intake and it cleans out the gunk. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I looked into this and was told that the EGR valves definitely couldn't be blocked?  Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

Have a chat with gary @ Alive Tuning - he's managed to map them shut ... Regards,

Nick, bite the bullet and get them done before you overspeed one of your Turbo's! This will usually result in the Turbo failing very soon after the EGR is replaced, often destroying your engine! This is fact sir!!!

craig, if the EGR is blanked out or mapped out will it be detrimental to the turbo?

thanks... so if they are stuck open this will happen? or if I replace them it could kill the turbo? sorry, for being a div!

The light came on and since the diagnosis it hasn't re appeared!

The EGR allows a small amount if exhaust gas into the engine under certain circumstances. This is usually when the engine is hot and not under significant load. The added exhaust gas essentially reduces the effective amount of oxygen, which in turn can be thought of making a 3.6 into a 1.6 temporarily. This is good for emissions too as having the exhaust gas become part of the combustion again reduces Nox emissions. Disabling the EGR has no detriment to the engine as it's an emissions device and isn't used 100% of the time.

The problem is when the EGR is left open and you start putting load on the engine. The increased exhaust flow is routed back into the engine which increases the exhaust temp which then melts important things in the engine like turbo seals and the turbo itself, which is expensive, or even worse heats up your engine oil (turbos are oil cooled) and melts things inside the engine which is even more expensive.

Map it out and your engine will run cooler and it sometimes reduces turbo lag when overtaking, although this depends on how good your EGR system is in the first place. More benefit is had from disabling crude EGRs.

As for using some EGR cleaner, that might work in you have a small smattering of soot on your EGR, but by time most people have noticed degraded EGRs they will have had unburnt diesel, soot and anything else the air filter missed baked onto the EGR by 1200 degree exhaust gases. The only thing I've ever managed to use to clean an EGR is a bucket of petrol, 48 hours soaking and then an hour or two of wire brushing.

You can't block them as the ECU will still attempt to activate them. Instead removing the duty cycle from the ECU and it'll never attempt to monitor or open and close it.
