Well its been around 18 months of ownership with the following items replaced - all whilst owning a particularly 'I've poo'd more meaningful things' land rover warranty. The car has now done 77,000 miles, cost me £500 to tax a week back and has lost me around 10k in trading it it.
(nb. Some is not expected by me to be covered by warranty its for future owners reference)

Note this was purchased from a main dealer with the full checks performed before it leaves the garage etc. Ensure you visually check everything - be a pain in the arse!!!

So my breakdown of avoiding a breakdown:

4 New tyres - 450 - 275/45 R20 General Grabbers (Buckley Tyres)
New Tailgte seal supply and fit - £122.48 07/02/2014
Replace NSF Suspension Arm - £268.22 29/10/2013
Remove gearbox sump panel and replace sleeve, rebuild and fill with oil and fit supply rear brake pads £187.83 03/10/2013

Inspection 1.Service with replacement of locking wheel nuts £584.75 01/10/2013
Replace CV boot £364.94 06/08/2013
MOT - and replacement of O/S arm - £104.95 02/08/2013
Seized track rod arm due to driveshaft repair -£179.11 03/05/2013
Diagnostics of oil leak, 2 leaks found gearbox sump and nearside drive shaft replaced - £552.06 02/05/2013
Engine running fault - EGR valves replaced under warranty - diagnostics paid - £117.60 22/11/2012

However I still love the cars think nothing will ever compare to them and have found advice and the help on here utterly great. I have a lot of passion for the vehicles and as I stated when I joined wanted one from the early p38's. However I simply can't justify forking out so much for fuel, tax and repairs. This guts me as this country is intent on stopping people who work hard from owning what they want and treating themselves. Sadly they won the battle. I will 100% miss this car and want to get back in one whenever I see one.

It reminds me of a girl I once dated - great to look at but awful to go out with, temperamental, unreliable, crazy and had to go once my brain starting alarm bells ringing!

Sadly that time is Thursday when I trade it in.
Please if anyone buys this look after it like I have its a beautiful car with a lot of great history and hopefully something I will get into again later in life.

Worrying that what was £24,000 traded in for £14,000 though I did think of selling privately but I cant be arsed with the a.time wasters b.more salesmen c.Finance firms. Just needed to do it in 1 weekend and have done before I look at it and fall for it all over again and keep it!!

Many thanks again for those that helped me purchases, maintain and recommend a way of saving pounds. That said Ian Barclay is a legend in Wirral huge thanks to him.

Unfortunately I am beginning to agree, have been an LR and RR owner for over 20 years, love them to bits. BUT have always had another vehicle as daily driver so they don't do much of a mileage, my TD6 has done approx 60K in 8 years so the expense has crept up gradually. my classics hardly move. Anyway, last year I bought a TDV8 RRS as a daily driver..... sold within 5 months, bloody nightmare mechanically as well as being too small, also lost financially, have been looking at an SC to replace it but now considering another marque due to my mistrust of reliability, I will always have an RR just can't see it as a daily driver at the moment, just my tuppence worth

Sorry to hear that matey, only just realised you are only down the road from me.
Totally understand your point about selling private with tyre kickers, test drives and what not, I too just can't be arsed with all that anymore I'm afraid.

Interested in what you've going to next. Did you sell it locally?

Looked at many many cars and none had the presence or appeal of the RR but have good 4 years warranty free servicing, more kit etc. sad to leave but also a weights lifted.

Skot this is the real things that I think LRS miss the point on. There is loyalty to these cars in a big way. Sadly they don't build them with quailty in mind. Reading the L405 saga with the knocking is just insulting and just confirms what sadly England stands for right now. Glossy image with no quailty or substance, bit like Cheryl cole or whatever her name is.

I'm not going to bash them as I utterly adore them and always will it's just time to hand the keys to someone that can maintain and cherish it without thinking it's madness.

Crookedm, best of luck I am sure you won't need it with a new X1, what will you do with all the spare cash you will have......

To be fair, mines my daily driver and its 11 years old and done nealy 130k.

I rely on it to get me to work and back up the motorway.

It has always had a decent warranty, and still does until Nov 2015 when I will be given chance to extend it again hopefully.

Warranty pays out on the non consumables.

Would I keep it without ? Not sure if I'm honest.

Love it to bits, but could get a nice German diesel car for the money........

Rosco funny you say that. Another factor for gettin rid is that currently my round trip is 35miles. Soon it will be 10.
So I didn't want to drive the RR such short distances it'd kill it. So from 175 a week to 50. May save to buy a new RR on a 2025 plate lol!


Forgot to mention I have a genuine rubber boot liner for sale lol has a slight rip but it's not noticeable.

Parkgate, so probably just the other side of Boathouse Lane from where you are.

Sounds trouble free motoring with that X1 deal, just make sure to keep on top of Halliwell Jones if that's were you got yours from. I bought my last car from their Chester dealership.

My daily commute is around 55 miles at the moment and I'm averaging 20/21 which I'm quietly pleased with.

Ah yes know it well.

It is Haliwell Jones I'm impressed so far the guy I'm dealing with is from Prenton he's great. No horse from him. Totally open with me.

It's good being on here throughout my ownership as I've managed to change people's perception on owners of RR's ie I've shown them helpful posts and advice I've had on here. No idea what type of people other car owners think we all are!

Not to be a vulture at the remains but I would take the bootliner if price was right

How typical is this sort of situation?

I'm looking at circa 8 year old V8s and SCs and whilst I expect them to need maintenance, £1k a month is not something I want to get into!

I make that £2627.91 maintenance over 18 months which is £145.99 per month.

Can't say mine is much different to maintain - maybe worse. The big difference is mine isn't losing £10k in depreciation because it's so old, but then crookedm's TDV8 is a much nicer car than mine!
