First Gentle Laning

Hi all,

Thought I would post my first pic & my first off road experience. Gentle country lane near to my house.;
A few ruts, mainly chalk and mud. About 1.5 miles long with quite a rise and fall. Tried low range and HDC, all working fine.
Road tyres and a dry day. FFRR was great if I had closed my eyes I would have thought I was on tarmac, smooth, quiet & effortless.

Just need to find more challenging ground.

I think mine is smoother and more comfortable on fields than it is on roads

Looks great. Thats the perfect way to start - keep it easy and don't go farther than your risk tolerance. Very Happy

No offence intended but that is a road!

Apologies about the quality but was taking ages to upload so trimmed the video and down-sampled it but even this is a road!

Was taking it very gingerly as it was about a month after buying it and about 10 minutes before that portion of video I'd burst the front driver's side tyre and cut the rear to the core. There were only two major issues - stupid wheels (they are 19" but having come from Series and Defenders they're still stupid low-profile tyres) and width - some of the lanes in the Lakes are really really narrow Shocked

[edit]But nice to see some people using them for what they are capable of[/edit]

what an amazing video. did you shoot it with a candle and daguerreotype? Smile
honestly though, that sort of terrain is doable in a Range; but unseemly

Chap following me (obviously) shot the video, that short portion in its original format was >250MB hence the dung-like quality. If I get a chance I'll upload the better ones tonight, there's about 2GB of footage I think...

It wasn't doable - the FF made mincemeat of the majority of it, apart from the bit where the route made mincemeat of my tyres Big Cry. Although to be fair I seriously doubt whether any tyre would have survived what I hit. Might as well have slashed the side-wall with a knife as that's basically what I did. Nice loud pop though...

General consensus from the group I was with was the RR was more capable off-road than all the other vehicles there (3x 90's with various engines and 2x 110's). As I said to a chap yesterday the only thing I think I've lost going from Defender to FF is character and bashability (and ironically with my Defender a bit of reliability).

I was a careful driver in the 110 when off-road (gently-gently type rather than lunatic) but I did have to change techniques slightly with the FF. Basically you need to be more enthusiastic with the loud pedal (to tell the Terrain Response that yes you do infact want to get over that stupidly big rock) but at the same time gentler because the tyres don't have as much give in them. With the Defender and the tyres I had (BFG Muds) you could throw them and hit anything with them and they just seemed to take it.

Seriously contemplating going down to Seven Sisters in September as looking through the video carefully last night (chap I met was one of the organisers) there doesn't look like anything the Full Fat won't be able to do without a bit of care...

Should be some good footage if I pluck up the courage / get some rest from returning from Verdon the weekend before...

If I remember correctly that's not actually a Freelander. I'm pretty sure it's a tricked out Disco (perhaps with a VCool with a fibreglass body to look like a Freelander...

Although this chap I met yesterday (sold a heated windscreen for a Defender) has gone around the site in a bog-standard Freelander 1.

Got a few interesting lanes up near me if you're interested. Although only found a couple that aren't overly scratchy for a FF, it definitely lives up to it's name. One which I'd love to do was tight even for my Defender...

Well SB1976, looks like a nice car on a nice lane. I like my off-roading to be just gentle stuff if I want to go over the very rough tracks I take my mountain bike. Actually I've found it to be much faster, probably more fun and certainly less expensive than taking the FF. Geoff
