Hi/low box motor

Had the car a few weeks now but due to work commitments not had time to have a good look over it.
Started with the headlamp wiper motor passenger sides works, drivers side not, easy fix swap them round to see if its the motor or not.
The working one works on both sides, the drivers side only works on the passenger side, strange or what .... none of them spray water. Very strange but I'll look at that another time.
Second thing was the was a transmission fail program warning that popped up last week. Although it drives fine curiosity says it has to work without a fault message.
So narrowed this down to the hi/low shifting motor.
As a test to see if it actually works I put it into low, gearbox is now in low ..... but it wouldn't move back to high .... WTF !!!!
Took the motor off tested it on the bench which seemed ok.
Stuck it back on the box again flicked the switch but its still stuck in low.

Needs to come out of low and back to high .... someone has to drive to work in the morning.

Couldn't see a way to manually move the box back to high so thought I'd try it with a battery connected directly to the motor.
Anyone who has taken this motor off will know where the power connecter sits and although its easy to get the connector off actually seeing the pins is something else.

You need a long bendy neck or a mirror and a torch, first one I haven't got.

So cut a long story short, take the connector off the motor, two cables plus and a min on poles 9 and 10 doesn't matter which way if it doesn't turn the motor switch them round.

The two pins are the most bottoms ones on the motor, this is what the mirror is for as you can't actually see them, kind of searching in the dark type thing.

Anyway when you've managed to get the two cables on put 12v onto them and hope the motor spins.
When the motor turned back to the high position as if by magic the fault message also disappeared.

Some pics to try and explain what you've just read !!!!

Well done rejo, I have the same problem as you (have had for years) and not been able to resolve the reason why it won't go back up into high. I resorted to using a knackered old motor which I dismantled, bolted on and span the motor spinlde to wind the thing back up into high. I even have a new motor (wrapped up nice and warm in the garage) which didn't fix things.

Your first job is to check if your resistor is working properly check the wiki, search the forum and powerfuluk videos on how to do this. You can also check the communications between the ECU and the motor to ensure the cabling is all OK, but this is a battery out job as the ecu lives behind it. .

Yes thats true, but that doesn't get the gearbox back into high.
You could possibly look at this as an easy way to get out off low box.

If you power the motor up while it's on the car this will move the box back to high or to low depending on what you want.

Ok, it seems as though I still have a problem somewhere.!
The same thing happened again yesterday .... Gearbox suddenly goes into low gear.
This happens without touching anything let alone the hi/low switch.
So back under the car with some cables and a battery.
Car back in hi box with no fault reading.

But this is what's confusing me a bit.
I can move the car with the switch on the centre console into low box but it will not move back into high when using the switch.
I can move the motor with cables and a battery to get it back to hi when I connect directly to the motor itself, so I know the motor isn't dead

This sort of tells me that the switch might have something to do with this.
Anyone have a clue why this is happening before I start ripping the switch out.
Cheers
Jo

I had a situation in my TD6 where the transfer shift motor was playing up so it was disconnected. The gearbox was physically in high but the engine ECU thought it was in low and the driving behaviour was odd! It would change at 3000 RPM even in kick down. As soon as I plugged the TSM connector back on, the gearbox went straight back to low and there it stayed.

It feels as though the ECU may be confused? 2006 4.2 SC

I should check what range the shift motor is telling the ECU it’s in. The resistance between pins 1 & 2 should be around 4.7 kilohms in high range and 1.6 kilohms in low range.

Also might be worth trying a Fuse 37 reset/recalibration.

on the subject of your headlight wiper the drivers side one ,or passenger side if your car is a normal one in the uk.
the power goes to the headight wiper and then goes to the headlight washer pump if your pump is no good then the headlight wiper may not work . I had exactly the same problem and a new headlight washer pump sorted it.
