L322 Seat refurb - Parchment Leather

Have owned the Rangie a few months now am really enjoying it despite it being the Wifes car. Have been contemplating upgrading to a 4.2 S/C but can`t justify the extra cost right now so am setting about bring my 4.4 up to scratch.

I cleaned the seats the other week and had some good results however the front seats were looking very tired. The drivers seat in particular was an embarrassment. Despite an endless supply of parts on ebay for these cars I haven`t been able to find any replacement parchment covers or decent condition second hand seats so have decided to take matters into my own hands. During the week I ordered a colourant kit from Furniture Clinic (£40) and today I set about stripping and repainting the drivers seat.

The kit consists of the following;
100ml Leather Prep Cleaner
100ml Alcohol Cleaner
250ml Leather Colourant
100ml Super Seal + 100ml Leather Finish
Spray Gun + Propellant
Sponges & Accessories

This is what they started out like

Took all of 10 minutes to remove the seat. The seats are held in by 4 bolts and you need to unscrew the bolt holding the seatbelt to the seat frame. Power to the seats comes via a single yellow connector. Simply slide the black plastic catch to the right and then pull the socket towards you and it comes out. There is no need to disconnect the battery but just make sure your key goes nowhere near the ignition while the power harness to the seats is disconnected otherwise you will get the airbag warning light on the dash.

masked up and a once over with the leather prep and alcohol cleaner.

The dye is then sprayed on and dryed with a hair dryer betwen coats. This is what they looked like after 3 coats.

Note they look very glossy however this is later toned down by the matt finish

A seal is then sprayed on to lock in the dye and one dry the finish is applied, matt in this case.

Back in the car. Colour is ever so slightly lighter but its probably more a case of the existing interior having darken over the years.

It took quite a few hours to complete the process but overall i`m very happy with the results. I`ve got to do the passenger seat next weekend but if I was embarking on the project again I`d hire a small compressor and spray gun from Furniture Clinic as the hobby air brush that comes with the kit gets clogged up with the dye and while it deliveres good result a proper spray gun would be far better at giving an even and consistent application of the colour and sealant.

There are a few stages to this refurb but essentially its all very straightforward and I`d rate this a 2/10 on the difficulty scale 10 being profesisonal/garage only.

Their video guides are quite helpful

Fantastic! Thumbs Up Bow down
The FFRR doesn't need it, but the "offroading" Disco 1 certainly could.

I take it that this covers wear and cracks, but not rips? Is that right?

If your leather is ripped then there are products available to seal it and then i guess you could just apply the colourant process after.

I`m not expecting the finish to last as long as the original but it should still last for quite a while.

They have a number of vehicle colours in their system that they mix up for you however you can provide a sample and they will match. Fortunately Range Rover pre 2010 parchment was on their system.
