Origin of the term L322 and other (L405, L494)

Hi Gang,

I understand this is the BMW coding that lead to the "L" letter + numbers, probably "L" for Land Rover, though some BMW products are names "E," etc.

Anyway, does anyone know why it is called L322, then why L405, L494, L319, L320 and so one.

Thanks l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

To BMW it was the L30.......

Historically, each BMW has carried an E project number – standing for Entwicklung, or development.

The L must be something else.

BMW now uses an F as all the double digit codes on the E have been used now. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Apparently the Rover 75 was known as the R40 to BMW, so I'm guessing that the L would stand for Land Rover as you suggest, as it looks like they used R for Rover...... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Oh for Censored sake !

Rolling with laughter

So no model was ever designed in the same room ? Are we sure ?

And they had increasing number of rooms as time went on ?

Perhaps they changed the room number on the same room.

Messing with my head now Laughing 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

It's the vehicle code, BMW used Enn and now Fnn, LR use Lnnn. Jaguar use Xnnn

Some old Rover Group codes were building or office numbers (P38A and CB40 spring to mind), and under BMW there were Rnn codes - for example the new Mini project codes of R50, R52, R53, R56 etc.

L314 - Freelander 1
L316 - Defender
L318 - Discovery 2
L319 - Discovery 3 and 4 (LR3/4)
L320 - Range Rover Sport 1
L322 - Range Rover 3
L359 - Freelander 2
L405 - Range Rover 4
L494 - Range Rover Sport 2
L538 - Range Rover Evoque
L550 - Discovery Sport

They are broadly speaking in chronological order, but there are some oddities - L322 (launched 2002) is in the sequence after L320 and L319 (2005, 2004).

There are also loads and loads of L numbers that are not public Smile

I'm surprised the Defender used Arabic numerals rather than Roman ones. L-cccxvi Mr. Green
