Totally agree, most of us have a mix in our ancestry so we are rarely a pure nationality. I have a bit of Scottish and Irish if you delve far enough back.

I also find it a bit odd that if a Scot or person with strong Scottish roots is working in London and in politics especially he seems to be grouped in as English, City workers or Westminster elite. Their Scottish side seems to be conveniently ignored.

I understand that many Scots are not happy with Westminster (as are many English etc), but they fail to notice that many of the Prime Ministers and Cabinet ministers in recent times have been Scottish or part Scottish.

So slagging off how things have been run, the financial mess we are in and saying Scotland has no representation is a little hypocritical. A Scot steered us into the meltdown back in 2007. Without the opportunities that England has given to Scotland with the Union, Britain would never have reached the status it has done, so we have all benefited whether we like it or not.

Either way, I am happy which ever way Scotland goes as long as it benefits their people rather than their politicians and I just hope that we can remain brother countries working and trading together in this evermore globally competitive World. Tom

Robert, to be fair to our neighbours on the big island called the United Kingdom. The Netherlands also has quite a bit of regionalism going on. Hollanders (West central) are quite different from Limburgers (South East), Friezen (North), Groningers (North East and most certainly no Frisians), Drenten, Brabanders, Zeeuwen, Oosterlingen etc.

Apart from the Frisians (they have a separate language from Dutch, not a dialect) trying to be independent of sorts, most people within the Dutch border don't want to split into different countries as the majority realizes that together is better than apart. They may not always like each other or understand each other (lot of times very literally) but they still think being together is the smarter way.

And although Scotland seems to have a lot of opportunity to "make it on their own" I think that over time it is not smart to be independent unless you're so "loaded" (like Norway) that you really don't need anybody else, right now. Because when the oil and gas runs out (and being in that industry gives me some authority to discuss it here) and WHEN is most definitely not too far away, places like Scotland and Norway will struggle and are likely to be better of being part of a whole.

The same as the EU. The British not wanting to be part anymore (well not just the British) is not a smart move considering the big economic blocks that you (I don't even live in the EU anymore) are competing against are too powerful to "go on your own" against. Now I do agree that the EU has turned into a bit of a badly managed deal at the moment and it needs some serious restructuring, it is still a good idea and having the UK (including Wales and Scotland) in it is beneficial for the EU and the UK IMHO.

So stop this nonsense about all the bad stuff that happened centuries ago (I mean look at Europe happily working/dealing with Germany and Italy after WW1 and 2) and create a strong economic block for all of the EU member states. Each of them has something to contribute, some more than others but that is part and parcel of it. The competing blocks BRICS, ASEAN will otherwise kick the EUs ASS and that is not good for anyone. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

The D-day commemoration last week made me think that we were all happy enough to be British when they were fighting shoulder to shoulder. Probably all proud to be fighting for their regiments be they Scottish or English and proud to be called British soldiers...
I don't think there is anything wrong with being fiercely proud of your nationality. As I always say to my sisters English husbands, I'd rather be scottish than English! Just as happy to be called British tho'.. Previously..

My issue with the Nationalists campaign is that they infer that if you aren't in favour of independence, you clearly aren't patriotic!

As for the oil, we know it will run out but even at current levels the revenue wouldn't cover the bloody Housing Benefit in Scotland........I could go on but its Friday and I am too tired

Without knowing any of that a predicted budget can't be anything except a guess and trade barriers are also uncertain. Who would honestly vote for something so woolly and vague? I'm not the sharpest tool in the box myself but even I can see that voting for that would be more than a little foolhardy.

^ indeed. For a party to stand up and say that they can survive on their own they must have worked out that financially it is viable. That would mean they have done a budget, therefore they must have all the figures available. I have not seen any details anywhere that show what spending and revenue would be if we were independant. How can anyone make a decision based on big eck's buzzwords.... Madness.

It's a a mistake commonly made by Yanks, which I can understand given their lack of history in their school curriculum. I would have thought however our European neighbours, and one time historical allies of Scotland (against the English), would at least try to understand rather than generalise and possibly offend.

It is a bit funny to think that, while this voting is going on, on this side of the Atlantic, if most people could even FIND it on a map I'd be surprised. To most, Scotland and Ireland are definitely part of England and Wales referrers to big fish.
