United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.2 SC V8 Bonatti Grey
New owner

Just thought I would say hello here as I get my 2005 4.2 S/C Vogue SE tonight. The car in question used to belong to my Dad who sadly passed away over Easter rather unexpectedly so I have sold my 2007 Discovery 3 TdV6 HSE and we are going to use this instead. We only do around 8000 miles a year so the costs should roughly work out the same, if not a bit less for the Range Rover versus the Discovery 3.

I do have some questions for you all:

How easy is it to have a detachable tow bar retrofitted? Anyone got any recommendations for companies in the south east? If I don't fit a tow bar, then what recommendations do you all have for roof bars and bike carriers? I need a bike carrier that would not damage my road bike. I currently have an Altera Strada that carries four bikes and fits on the tow bar that was great on the Disco as it doesn't add any extra height and everything sits behind the car out of the way.

The sat nav is the original disc and we spend a bit of time every year driving through #Europe, is there any way to upgrade the sat nav so that I only have on DVD like the Disco rather than the 9 CD's that I have seen advertised that would be required for the Range Rover.

Many thanks Alex

England 2009 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Santorini Black

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I had a detachable towbar and 13 pin electrics fitted in June last year to my TDV8 Vogue by Indespension, they're a national company so have depots all over the country, I'm in North Kent, edge of London and the nearest to me was Redhill. I wanted the same as would be standard fit if you bought the car new from a Land Rover dealer and if you did that they would usually out source the work to a specialist like Indespension, and going direct as I did saved me a few hundred quid. Overall very happy with what they did and would gladly recommend them Thumbs Up

The oem fit bar is a westfalia tow bar, there are other non oem bars available but the westfalia is the best imho as it is the same as the lr one.

This is probably the one you want, really depends as they changed slightly in 2005 and the hangers swapped about a bit so if yours is a 2006 my (which i suspect it is as its a sc) then it will need the 2006 > version.

http://www.pfjones.co.uk/range-rover-2002-...w-bar.html

Land rover will do it for you at with a full lr branded kit but it is expensive, any local tow bar fitter should be able to fit the bar, but i would buy the electrics kit direct from LR get the tow bar fitter to install it then pop back to LR to have it coded to the car.

Personally would go with the detachable over the flange kit as long as you can get the bike rack to fit.

Is you sat nav touch screen? If so it should be dvd based (though someone may correct me) so should all be on one disc depends on MY not the reg plate. They are available from LR though there occasionally some for sale on here, so check the for sale section. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks for that, I found the website yesterday but got very confused with the model year etc...Land Rover want over £2,000 to supply and fit so not going for that. I much prefer to have the bikes on a tow bar rather than the roof so trying to get it sorted before end of August as taking bikes on holiday with me.

Is there any way of telling if my car has the correct bar already fitted? Apparently this is what can bump up the cost with Land Rover as not every RR has this particular bar fitted.

Car was registered in June 2005, and chassis number has 6A in so presume this is a 06 MY?

I looked at the back of the car yesterday and there is a DVD drive for the sat nav and 99% sure that the sat nav DVD box said Navteq on it which. I didn't fancy having 9 CD's for maps so hopefully should be down to one disc!

I am in the motortrade and work for a VW garage and was going to buy the parts and get my guys to fit the tow bar here and the electrics. On the new VW's the tow bar needs to be coded to tell the vehicle that it has a tow bar as it works iwht the ESP and ABS etc...is this the same with the RR?

Many thanks Alex

No that's fine and understandable. Would the one form my Discovery work or is that a different system? Disco is a 2007 model year.

I will try it tonight, I thought the Range Rover was CD based so have agreed that the updated disc would go with the Disco that is being collected tonight Censored Alex

All good and correct answers so far.

When I bought my SC last summer it didn't have a towbar and I wanted the genuine stuff, but bought it from PFJones as in the link above.

I got my local dealer to fit it at a cost of £300, total cost was about £550 I think, which was a big saving on the £2k they quote!

Can you tell the difference? Absolutely not, other than the tow ball cover says Westfalia rather than Land Rover.

You may be able to make a copy of your Satnav DVD, but if its quite new then it might be protected. A new disc is about £140 I think.

would fitting a westy towbar invalidate LR's official warranty ? I'd like a towbar on mine but I have the full official warranty in place.

Welcome... Yours (as all SC's started at) is indeed an 06MY... Your disc from the D3 will fit/work as it has exactly the same nav setup Thumbs Up (CD based nav was pre 05MY)

Westfalia make the official tow bar for JLR so, if you by one directly from them it cuts out the middleman (JLR profit) Thumbs Up the electrics are simply plug and play. (Westfalia only make one tow bar system for the L322 with two options of hitch attachment A, detachable like the D3 & B, farmer's adjustable) so as long as it's a Westfalia, it will be identical to what JLR will sell you Thumbs Up

Tell your fitters to be careful removing the rear bumper as the outsides have a habit of spitting if they are too heavy handed Rolling Eyes Whistle

And finally. Im so very sorry to read about your fathers passing... Lost mine 9 months ago, so understand how you must be feeling sir Bow down

Craig

Thanks for all the tips and the welcomes Thumbs Up

Looked at the Westfalia on a link that was supplied earlier and there are two that are the same price for different model years so just got to sort that out.

Losing Dad has been a massive blow. He was only 63 and on holiday in Mexico with Mum. As it was his car before she brought it round last night and cried the whole way over. But it's better that we use it rather than sell it and never see it again Thumbs Up

Condolences to you Craig, it's utterly horrible.

Hello Alex & welcome - a quick note ref your tow options.
Last year I sourced a used armature via ebay - they come up quite regularly.
In hindsight, I'd have had mine blasted & powder or nylon coated for a superior finish to standard.
The drop down hitch attachment is definitely the way to go with regards to versatility and that the "quick release" version usually doesn't !
Just spotted your 7 race car - I sold my 7 road car last year . . . sorely missed !
You'll love your Dad's car -
Best wishes
Paul

Thumbs Up
PS My DIY armature fitting is in the WIKI Where do you go after one of these . . . ?
