Suspension air leaks

'Suspension fault' appeared on the screen yesterday then went away. Same happened this morning, followed by the '30mph warning', then 'suspension will raise when system has cooled', then 'rising slowly'. The car is clearly not getting to full height.

I am assuming that there must be leak and have read a range of threads on here. It seems that the main sources of leaks are the rubber bellows on the air struts and air pipes chaffing on chassis parts.

Are there any other likely leak points I should look at first, before doing a full system fairy liquid check? 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

I had a similar problem with mine after messing with the IIDTool, left the system in "tight" rather than "normal" tolerance mode and the compressor pump repeatedly overheated. Geoff

Unfortunately yours is about 1 year after mine with the front bags going at the same age more or less (mine is a May 05 build, the 4.2 SC, not the new one Smile ). I went for the new front struts/bags and it was great since.

We only realized the bags were gone once the struts were removed and you could see the extent of tearing. We tried to patch them up while waiting for the new ones to arrive but no way.

I have seen issues with the air line coming off but considering your cars age my best guess is bags gone.

I would like to suggest to park it in a quiet spot, pump it to access height and switch everything off so you can listen for air leaks. And maybe try to use soapy water on the bags to see if that shows you bubbles. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Front air strut perished and leaking. Replace ASAP before compressor gets tired and then replace the one that is still working after pay day: another weekend rolling around on the driveway to relish.

Incidentally, dealer wanted £1k plus for parts and labour to replace one. £310 + VAT from Dan for OEM part.

Will replace with OEM. According to this forum, Delphi not Dunlop. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

Leaking strut now replaced. No obvious hole in the rubber. Where the leakage was occuring just had the tell tale signs of perished rubber at the bottom where it folds: small cracks just like the wall of an old tyre. The other side has similar symptoms and even though not leaking perceptably, will change it soon. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

Glad you're sorted RRBlue. Thumbs Up

I had the joys of "Suspension Fault" on the way home tonight. Put into off road mode (got the "Rising Slowly" message) and i can hear the air hissing out of the OSF strut. It seems Ok in normal ride height but if I reverse and brake sharply making the back end dip and the front air rise I can hear the hiss until the car comes back down again.

So two news struts and bags then......... Big Cry

Does it EVER end?!

I'm not sure that I want to know the answer to the question but I'll ask anyway......Do the rear air bags fail too? 2006 4.2 SC

Not wishing to hijack RRBlue's thread but as his issue is sorted, it may be better to keep the information in one thread. Do you have any views on the following to replace my hissing OSF airbag please.........

1) I can either order 2 x Delphi struts @ £260 + VAT each - Total = £520 + VAT Big Cry
Advantage = Fairly quick and simple job to replace plus struts include shock absorbers.

Or

2) Having spoken to a LR dealer they will sell a bag only for £182 + VAT
Advantage = I only need to replace the failed bag but I understand it's a pig of a job to fit so the labour charges could make option 1 the more cost effective option.

Any thoughts please? Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

I asked Dan at Duckworths whether the rears struts were as troublesome. His reply was that he does not get as many requests for rear struts as front ones.

Fingers crossed. 2014 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography & 2015 3.0SDV6 HSE Lux Discovery 4

@RRBLUE/SKOT

Search for the post where a rear bag blew up on the road! But Dan is right they seem less troublesome. (Guess what is going to happen to me tomorrow

@SKOT

Worth spending the money on a new strut with bag IMHO. Just not worth the effort. .

Chaps,

Where the EAS strut is referred to as "RIGHT" E.g. this.....

http://www.island-4x4.co.uk/spring-strut-f...-2595.html

Is "RIGHT" the driver's side on a RHD or passenger side? I suspect it's the former but could do with knowing please.

Thanks in advance. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

RIGHT is always RIGHT, when viewed from rear of the car.

So on RHD car, RIGHT FRONT is Drivers Side .
