Car garages - Dangerous & frustrating places

Just been to a non LR main dealer for the third time in a month to collect a non LR car that has had a few snags.

So, on arrival, I noticed it wedged into a car parking space, flanked by cars either side. Instead of going into the premises I walked over to it, hackles up thinking "there better not be any dents"; and so from 30 feet away, I picked out 2 lovely new dents on the driver's door.

Walked into service, reported it and then had 5 managers/ staff looking at it for the next 20 minutes, trying to persuade themselves that either they couldn't see it or that aliens must have cast a rash like spell on the door overnight ("it's there from one angle but not from others").

Then, I opened the car and to my amazement, ash, all over the centre console and passenger seat. "Has someone been smoking in this car?"... Cough/ ahem, 'No, nobody would do that.'

Muddy footprints in the front passenger and rear passenger area, soiled seatbelts and a dirty feel to the steering wheel. Has someone been using this as a take home car? 'You did say you didn't want us to clean the car.' I didn't say use it as a skip!

And finally, on starting the car up, the petrol warning light unexpectedly came on (15 miles until empty), a glance at the odometer indicative that the car had been comprehensively "road tested" by way of diagnosis and confirmation that "the repairs have been completed".

5 minutes in the car en route home confirming not only a fresh new steering vibration/ wobble but also that the 2 issues it actually spent over a week there for are unresolved.

Brilliant! Bow down

When we moved from the North West down to Wiltshire, we took our 3.9 Classic into a local 4x4 'specialist' for its MOT and service, when we picked the car up, although it was clean inside, there were 100 odd miles more than it went in with, we later heard from a friend who had spotted the car on the road to Southampton!!

No, not brilliant at all. Censored

That's reason enough for prolonged and uncontrolled scene making, probably in front of all their other customers.

If anyone smoked in my car they would be facing a very large detailer's bill (through courts if necessary) and same deal on dents, shoddy work, unauthorised use of my car etc.

And for pudding I'd let trading standards know what they were up to. Probably followed by the local rag.

I'm not quite sure how you haven't strangled someone in all honesty, definitely calmer than I am. You wouldn't accept it if it was a hospital treating a loved one, or a Vet treating your dog.

An in-built tracking device (as used by commercial van / lorry fleets) can show very interesting information.

A friend of mine has one, the garage collected his car (not a LR product) from his office and he tracked it driving up the M1 (top speed of 92 - could be worse I guess) and park at the garage. There it sat all day. No activity until 4PM when he received an "ignition on event" and the car was driven straight back to him with a bill of £339 and declared as "all done for you".

The garage had clearly run out of time and not had time to service it. They managed to find the time to raise an invoice though! It happens, garages do run out of time when they get diverted to emergency work and I am sure that most are honest enough to rebook it for another time.

It's an eye opener though. 2006 4.2 SC

Hence I dont trust garages any more.

My FF went to a garage for some warranty work a few weeks back, as I have a dash cam in it I thought I'd see what if any driving around was done, to my shock this Censored rolled up to a junction then FLOORED it out, bong goes the speed set reminder, same trip he does it again after some road works and over takes a car...........What wrong with it, BOTH times he got to 75mph in a roadwork 40 mph zone Shocked
I texted the mrs ( who works at the garage ) and give him hell. If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Mate dropped his ford at a large dealership in Stoke for some work, started walking to work. His car came past driven by a young lad in mechanics overalls who wheelspan out of a junction and the car was then spotted outside a bacon butty shop!
The service manager had his ear bent!

trust no one
@ welshdragon good call with dashcam thinking of investing in one. Mine was a blue one! Smile

Welshdragon, I'd be handing a copy of your dashcam video to the police - dangerous and inexcusable behaviour

As for the other issues, trading standards, small claims and local rag every time Twisted Evil 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

If it happens that he was up to 75mph in a 40mph zone and was caught on a speed camera, I assume that its the mechanic would would be done?

+1...I would go absolutely Nucking Futs if someone did that to MY car!......A friend of mine had a similar issue with a Shagwar MD who ignored his complaint outright (the car had been spotted in a pub car park overnight and came back dirty and ash ridden) but as he owned a vehicle graphics company, he decided to have it fully graphic'd up with lettering detailing each and every issue he had suffered with the car since day one and details of his allegations regarding the "extra use" the vehicle had been subject to whilst in the dealers care (I understand he took wording advice from his solicitor before doing it) he then parked it outside their frontage (on the public highway) and called the press to take piccies....within 10 minutes, the Chairman of the dealer group had called him to offer an apology plus a refund on the service, plus the next service free plus he arranged to have the vehicle full de-logo'd / detailed and filled with a full tank of juice..nice result, but unfortunately for the dealer, it still went in the local rag anyway Rolling with laughter serves em right GONE 2010 Facelifted 3.6 TDV8 - Stornoway Grey + 22" Overfinch Olympus

A good few years back my mother in law had a relatively new Fiesta XR2i

Went to a small local non franchise garage for something minor, can't remember now ...

Anyway, car isn't back by late afternoon, gets a phone call, "can you come down to garage please"
Gets a lift down there ,takes ages , roads all snarled up....

Her car in middle of a busy road on its ROOF !! Rolling with laughter

The young kid in there had taken it for a road test,
Got carried away, clipped a kerb and rolled it

Made the local rag for all the chaos it caused Laughing Alcohol and eBay is never a good mix

It happens, it's why I rarely leave my car at the dealership, if it's in for a service I will wait with it, if it is for repairs I will send it to my matey mechanic, who collects and re delivers the same day, and I note the mileage and he knows that, I'm pretty sure that when it goes in for any paint the bodyshop man will drive it home so as not to leave it in the middle of an industrial estate, but I'm not that bothered as it always comes back spotless. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
