If topping up the GM5L40E on a TD6 the oil temperature must be between 35'C and 45'C. Temperature should be monitored if Testbook or similar available.

1. Car level. chocked or correctly lifted.

2. Start Engine, move selector from P through all gears pausing in each gear for 2-3 seconds and return to P Position.

3. Clean Area around Filler Plug

4. With engine running remove filler.level plug and allow excess fluid to drain. (VERY HOT!)

5. If no fluid loss is apparent when plug removed with engine at idle, fill gearbox with recommended fluid until a small thread runs out from filler hole.

6. move selector from P through all gears pausing in each gear for 2-3 seconds and return to P Position.

7.Fit new filler plug and tighten to 20Nm (15lb.ft)

My question re above is what is the normal operating temperature of the gearbox?

Because the transmission fluid cooler is an oil-to-water type, the transmission fluid tends to operate at the same temperature as the engine coolant i.e. between 90 and 110 deg.C.

The transmission cooling strategy mode is triggered by the ECU if the transmission fluid temperature exceeds 140 deg. C.

Thanks Phil, reason I asked is that to do the TOP UP you need to let the car cool down from normal running temp or warm up from cold so temp monitoring is essential. Infra red temp sensor or testbook or similar I guess.
