Brembo brakes - can you swap callipers to enable smaller rim

I'm wondering how easy would it be to convert the Brembo's on a 4.4TDv8 to the same size (smaller) brakes on the 3.6TDv8? This would enable me to move to the Compomotive 18 inch rims (which are proving very, very popular in Australia as they enable you to run good quality Light Truck (LT) tyres in the Outback). Alot of us "down here" tow heavy campers / off road caravans, extra fuel, etc over vast distances and the roads can be horrendous. Those (D3,D4, RRS) owners using Cooper LTZ in 19 and 20 inch have (in some cases) suffered numerous punctures and in even rim cracking (noting this is in extreme outback conditions).

So, is a move to the older style callipers easy???

cheers

That will depend largely on the mounting holes for the caliper. Technically, going smaller means no clearance issues and in theory is only a case of replacing discs, pads and calipers.

Since the smaller Brembos were very good on the earlier cars there is no reason they shouldn't be the same on a later car, again theoretically.

Practically though the insurance company might take a dim view of downgrading the brakes and if the mounting holes for the caliper are wrong you would be into changing struts etc as well.

then you have the unknown (to me) issues which may go with the systems which combine to give ABS, Adaptive cruise etc. There may be problems with how the electronics see the reduced braking performance and you probably wouldn't find this out until it's all done.

I think you may need to go for the non Brembo route, as the 3.6 4 pot Brembo im sure have the smaller mounting bolt holes... Maybe even the 3.0 405 front setup? Then you would need to take into consideration the over braking rear brakes (in comparison) But i agree, you may have issues with all sorts of other electrical safety issues too...

Fraught with problems though Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

There was an 18" alloy shown on here in the past year or so which fits over the Brembos. Manufactured by Bowler I think.

Possibly THESE but not sure. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster

That only fits over the 06-09 Brembos, the 4-Pot ones. I think a member TheAllSeeingPie did it on a 07 'charger. Compomotives I think.

They won't fit over the 6 pot Brembos from 2010 on though.

Yup Compomotive PD1880 / PD1881's fit a FFRR 07 SC with Brembos with no mods, the SSRR needs the anti-vibration weights turning 90 degrees. I hopefully get my car back in a few weeks so should be able to measure the inside diameter of them to see if you can fit them on a 2010?

Can the 2010 take a 07-09 19" wheel or are the brakes too big?

Yes, 19's fit OK; But those Bowler 18's would be so much better (stronger, better LT tyre choice etc).
