Interesting thread, we currently have a high spec Grand Cherokee from a hire company while our D3 is being repaired. (Grrr another story).

Trying to be objective with the following summary:

Plus
Reasonably well screwed together
Loads of tech. Digital instrument display has better info presentation than my L405.
Infotainment easy to use.
Performance and 8 spd auto
Bluetooth phone quality
Suspension handles our unmade lane well
Quiet at cruise.

Minus
No way in amongst all of the steering wheel controls to change radio volume
Cannot find postcode entry on nav
Very heavy bass on sound system with no control to get natural sounds
Big on outside, darker than Hades on inside and claustrophobic as a result.
Ergonomics (switches for seat functions all over place, indicators and wipers all on left stalk and I despite having had a number of Mercs find it unintelligible)
Fit and finish (tailgate on a 63 plate 5k miles needs a real help to close) and plastics and leather feel low rent.

To summarise its got most of the ingredients for a good cake but the icing hasn't been applied with any care! 2019 D5 HSE Lux SDV6 Indus

Wouldn't diasgree with anything that you say Nick it's not a Range Rover and never will be but the new GC is a quantum leap up from previous incarnations and has a much more European feel to it which no doubt will be down to the influences of Fiat. You sum it up well. It's why I prefaced my plus/minus with trying to be objective. If you have a budget constraint buying new you can straight away get more for your money than a D4, secondhand it will be massive value and with this incarnation it really has upped it's game. The last version was dire this is a huge step forward.

A few qualified observations to add to this thread; I bought a pre-reg Grand Cherokee Overland in 2012 and couldn't have been more happy with it. Well screwed together and with the panoramic roof it was airy inside. The 3.0 V6 diesel a strong performer and I saw over 30mpg on a run easily.

Tailgate wasn't an issue as electric and the volume controls ARE on the streering wheel (behind spokes). Also handled well and felt secure at speed. As this is the same chassis as the 2012 Mercedes M class that isn't a surprise.

My only real gripe was the 5 speed auto which never seemed to make the most of a tractable engine. They now have a modern 8 speed unit and it's much better.

After a divorce I had to sell the Jeep, but had a surprising amount of interest and lost in the region of 4,500 over the year or so I owned it, which I would say compares favourably with an RR of the same vintage.

Those who detract from the marque have probably never owned one of these new models - they're chalk and cheese from the earlier generations. In fact it felt better screwed together than my current RR Supercharged!

Interesting you mention that as I feel the main limiting factor in the Jeep GC is the gearbox but thats been resolved in the facelift with a ZF 8 speed which I have experienced in various cars and really is a masterpiece of a gearbox.

My wife had a Jeep Cherokee 3.7 V6 for 5 years and nothing at all went wrong with it. Sold it to a friend and he kept it for a further 3 years and still nothing went wrong with it.

I wish I could say the same about my RR and Disco II.

I would consider one of these in, say two years, when they have been hit by depreciation but still with low miles.

I agree the best time to buy a 2011-on new model Grand Cherokee will be at about 3-4 years old. Tried the 6.1 Hemi of the previous generation (2008 model) and was staggered at just how quick it was and how tough it felt, yet it wasn't the best quality trim. Still, most of the forums report brilliant reliability and sometimes I think I wouldn't have minded trading a bit of loose trim for that - especially compared with some LR products.

Love the engine HEMI and SRT8 Hemis (I run a Hemi Dodge Ram statesides), like the looks, but trim and finish in general are so-so, and residual value, well hum, hum...

As a matter of fact I just spent the day with the new Cherokee (not the Grand, the "norma"l one) and it is much less ugly in real life than in pictures. Very decent off road, much better than expected - on par with the Evoque in many points and better one some ie: full spare wheel in the boot, better rear vision by far, etc.

140 BHP is so-so, 170 is the one to get or the Petrol on. Thumbs Up

2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

I've been in a colleagues 14 plate GC Overland 3.0 Diesel for the last couple of days and have to say it's a very nice place to be and the 3L diesel with 8spd box is so smooth. I'd agree it's not a range rover, but it does seem to be an awful lot of 4wd for the £28k he's paid for it. A comparable RSS 14 plate is double that cost I guess Question Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

A friend has a Grand Cherokee and it falls into the same category as BMW, VW & Audi to me......they are reverse Tardises.How can something so big have so little space inside? I found the Jeep GC very cramped and with a tiny boot for such a large car, even smaller than a RR.
