Driven this junction roughly 4000 times over the last 10 years, the road to the right was clear for 800 yards back up the hill. 50 mph limit on this main road, which is what the Transit was doing. Yes, with hindsight I should have stopped and looked both ways ( I do now!) Shame we can't see the face of the Volvo driver Excuse the language!!

Surely with t he centre road markings that is an illegal place to overtake anyway? I thought that the central marked area was a refuge for cars turning right off the main road.

They are broken white lines, hazard lines with a cross hatched area, totally legal to overtake on, the highway code says you should "avoid" these areas it does not say you shouldn't drive on them.

Agree - the cross hatching is somewhat meaningless - it's the surrounding line that's important - the long line is a hazard line, but completely legal to cross - and therefore overtake. If it was surrounded by a solid line, then no overtaking. |

I have learn't to look both ways just like Joe, a near miss - although overtaking across a junction is not to be recommended. Geoff |

I genuinely thought it was illegal to overtake at any junction... Anyway, if it's not illegal it's still bloody stupid!! Previously..

There are lots of "rumours" about where you can't do this and that, it's because the highway code is not all law but "best practice" as well....

Sadly you'd have been the one at fault, but most important you are not hurt and neither is the car. I have been in a similar low speed bump recently and I'm the one bearing the brunt of a w r with a whiplash claim.
