Blueish smoke after idle tick over and no driving

My L322 is currently in limp mode awaiting the money to sort the gearbox issue that has cropped up.

As a result I am keeping the battery charged and oils in motion by starting her up on the driveway and letting her get to warm temperature in idle. I am able to drive a little (limited in limp mode), and noticed that initially she smokes quite a bit from the exhaust. Once warmed up this usually disappears. There were no issues prior to the gearbox failure.

Just wanted to know if this is normal for a diesel that has not had the chance to clear its throat on the road from a bit of full throttle. Tom

Thanks for the reassurance Stan, I started her up again and there is no smoke at all now, so I think the recent throttling cleared it out. Always worrying when you see smoke, but seems normal on Diesels. Tom

Could it be turbo seals starting to let go, that would produce smoke like this? Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

I'll keep an eye on it. The car has run for a couple of hours without moving or high revving so assume that it is a build up of diesel dust in the exhaust system, obviously it is not a common issue as most L322s will be driven. It is hard to rag it when it has limp mode on, but you can get the revs high enough to kick out a cloud, so hopefully it is just a build up over time.

I have changed the crankcase breather and the oil was changed just prior to gearbox failure and is on the level after checking so fingers crossed was just a build up, just looked really worrying when initially driving as it was in a seemingly permanent cloud of smoke. 2nd driveway drive of the day was clear. Tom

I can leave mine ticking over from cold for @ 30 minutes to warm through and get no smoke.... but car does get a good rive every day. Not gloating, just alternative experience. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink
