I have just fitted a BMW bluetooth ulf (84216945387) using the guides in here. All went well other than breaking one of the pins when removing them from the existing 54 pin to the new 54 pin. I used a spare pin from the now unused existing plug and soldered it to the broken one. I used Navcoder to change the name and set pairing on and paired it with my Motorola Moto G. Pairing was successful but now when the ignition is turned on the phone connects to the car and then appears to drop the audio link. I can dial using the screen on the car but the audio comes through the phone. Anyone else have this happen or can suggest what to do next? 2003 4.4 V8 Vogue

There are 2 (or 3?) pairs wires going from the 54 pin connector to the BM radio module - check the wiring diagrams in the RAVE. Unplug both the 54 pin connector and the BM connector and check for a connection with a continuity tester.
IIRC, these wires run through the big white connector that sits next to the harness (but I could be confusing this with something else...).

I was pretty careful repinning the 54 pin plug but will recheck tomorrow.
Will also try an older phone to see if it's a compatibility issue.

Two questions about the re-pinning:

The green wire that used to be in pin 38 on the original 54 pin plug now goes to pin 11 on the new plug, but as far as I can tell this seems to go to the eject box plug which is now disconnected so this wire is unconnected, is this correct?

The white wire that used to be in pin 2 on the original 54 pin plug now goes to pin 32 on the new plug. I believe that this goes to the eject box. Is this to connect a pairing switch between this wire and the brown/black earth wire?

I tried connecting the white to the brown/black with a switch, but it doesn't seem to operate the pairing function, instead it seems to operate the voice function. 2003 4.4 V8 Vogue

I'll have to dig out the chart I used and check for you.

None of the eject wires have to be connected for the ulf to work. They just go to a connector under the centre console as you say.

Wire 32 must always be connected to the ulf as it's the ground for the unit. If you connect the pairing wire to it, you'll need a choccy bock or something, as the link to the ulf must be maintained.

Checked all the wiring and it was correct according to the re-pin charts.
I tried connecting a switch from the white wire in the eject box directly to a chassis earth instead of the brown/black and it works for pairing. I saw in the forum that a few people have found the same.
The phone still didn't work so I tried an older phone and that works no problem, so it appears to be an incompatibility with the bluetooth unit and my phone.
Looks like I may have to go to plan B and install a Parrot kit.

Do you know anyone near with a later ULF that you can try it with ?

My version 6 works with the iphone 5, may be a better bet possibly ?

Yeah totally agree.
I'd love to keep it factory looking.
I'll keep looking for a more recent ulf but not holding out much hope of getting one at a reasonable price.
I have a couple of spare Parrot 3200 kits here so I'll fit one of those for now and see what happens.
If there is anyone near me with a later ulf I can try please let me know.
If anyone wants a generation 5 I'm open to offers.

I'm hoping that I can fit the Parrot blue box in the back and link in to the existing 54 pin plug to pick up the mic, mute etc. Will let you know how I get on. 2003 4.4 V8 Vogue

Hi there,

Did you manage to wire in the Parrot bluetooth to the 54 pin connector? Or did you opt for the newer ulf module?

I am about to venture into the unknown world of BMW ULF modules and wiring so wondered whether it is worth the hassle or just buy a Parrot?

Currenty I have:

12th generation ULF module
Voice activation button for steering wheel
Pairing button
Microphone
Pre-wired car (although I think buying the BMW X5 loom may be a better option and a rewire?)

Just need an aerial and I am sorted.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

There is nothing to stop you fitting it all without the aerial.

At least you should get telephone in white on the menu screen.

You should also have voice recognition working as well, if it's enabled on the ulf.

If you try and use a feature that needs the phone, it will just say "activate phone" on the screen until it's paired.

Much much better than a parrot.

I thought the rewire would involve me soldering all the pins together, followed by me setting fire to the car.....

When it came to doing it, it's dead easy. You just use a very small pointed tool and push the metal tag down on the pin you want to remove from the connector. It then slides out, with the pin still on the wire.

Slide in the new position, which is numbered on the plastic connector when you take it apart........

That's why in the other posts I've done on this, I recommend buying a new blank connector from an Audi dealer, so you just move the pins needed to the new connector and then use that on the ulf.

The problem is that i don't have the 54 pin connector to the white block adaptor.

I have tried to find one but they are like the proverbial rocking horse . . . .

Any advice would be great but otherwise the X5 loom may be bought? (one on bay of e for £40)

As you will still need a 54 pin connector, on a loom or new from Audi, to connect to the ULF, I'd imagine that the X5 loom will be the way to go, especially as it should be wired correctly.

As you don't already have the 54 way connector, are you sure your car is prewired for phone ? ie have you looked behind the panel where the microphone goes to ensure you have a connector there - if not, you'll be having to route one from the rear.....through the headlining..........

Mine was prewired, and I had the lead for the aerial also in the car already - just not the aerial above the sat nav.......

The white block is in the back and the 2 connectors, one under the cup holder in front of the centre console and in the roof lining are all there.

But think it may be worth just replacing with the X5 loom instead?

There is another mic set up instead of the stock one too so was wondering if it is worth wiring this in as it is directional? Need to find the other end of this though :-s

I have ordered the BMW loom just because i then have the parts necessary (plus my pairing button is also BMW so i don't need to rewire this too ).

I hope i can just connect into the system and 'cut and paste' into the mic and pairing wires?

If it were me, I'd just connect the x5 loom into the white plug in the boot to get the 54 pin connector. I'd use nothing else from it, if indeed there is more loom with it.

Forget the non standard microphone and remove all that.

The BMW microphone works fine and is factory fitted.

The pairing button is nice to have though, and should just need connecting to the plug under the centre console, and fitting somewhere. If that doesn't work out, fit it in the boot with the ulf like I did, though I had to use a switch from maplins...... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
