5.0 S/C - Any Pre Purchase Advice?

Hi, new to site and about to buy my first RR. Pretty much set of the 5.0 S/C over the TDV8, the fact it's roughly 10k cheaper and a guaranteed Autobiography spec makes the fuel cost worthwhile in my book?

Can anyone advise me on any potential issues to look for pre-purchase and are the quoted mpg figures realistic for mixed driving with occasional bursts of fun? Don't care hugely one way or another, but want to know in advance what my monthly outgoings will be. Any advice welcome. Cheers

+1. If you care about MPG or doing very high mileages why not buy a TDV8?

The quoted MPG figures are pretty optimistic. If you hit the loud pedal and do a lot of urban driving, budget for a lot more fuel than you expect Whistle Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Welcome to the forum Lord Gnome.

You are on the best site for quick replies to queries in the form of friendly and sensible advice.

The 5.0 SC has quite a following on here too so there are many well informed and enthusiastic members who will help you.

I think the L322 RR has universal features and peculiarities, regardless of engine type.

The SC engines are often referred to as bulletproof if looked after properly and - arguably - the main issue for most people actually seems to be whether the fuel costs are justifiable.

Below is a buying guide that relates to the 4.2 SC we bought from a main dealer last year. It should help you in some way.

Corrosion on the L322 is something to be alert to no matter the age of the car so check the known areas such as tailgate, rear arches etc.

Our experience could read like a horror story but almost 12 months in, it is a great car and both the selling and servicing dealerships have treated us well.

Condition is the key to success and don't take things at face value.

Thumbs Up

I want a bit of oomph so it was between the 5.0 S/C or the 4.4 TDV8 and I want the autobiography spec that comes standard on petrol. The 3.6 diesel is only 6mpg better (on paper) so feel the driving experience of the 5.0 worth it.
The diesels in that spec on the 4.4 seem to carry quite a premium and a lot seem to have red, brown or tan interiors that I don't want.
I do about 28k a year so I know it's going to be sore in fuel, but willing to take it for a year or two then might LPG once a bit older. I'm an overhead power line engineer so manage to avoid urban cycles to some extent, most low geared driving done on farm road ends and field access. Anyone got average combined examples? Is 19mpg reasonable to expect?

If you're going to do around 28k miles, I would seriously think about a 4.4 AB spec TDV8 and chip it. Granted it will never sound like an SC, but that's a huge amount of miles to keep in petrol, but if you budget for it and enter into it with your eyes ( and wallet) wide open, there's no better car for your money Thumbs Up
If you do some basic sums, assuming 15MPG, and just over £6 per gallon, 28,000 will cost about £12,000 a year. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Different engine and I think the 5.0 is meant to better fuel consumption than the 4.2 on runs?...

Ours returned 28mpg when driving it home at 60mph on cruise control from Wales over several hours after buying the car. It will easily return 19 mpg on a local 7 mile run when traffic is light on 40mph restricted roads/dual carriageways. 21/22mpg realistic on a 3 hour motorway trip from Scotland in the mid to late 70's mph.

Forum member BIGMAMMA recently bought a 5.0 SC and posted that he was "... getting 23 - 25 depending on road conditions, traffic etc, admittedly most of mine is up and down motorways... at 70mph cruising..."

I get 17mpg average. This is doing a 2 mile commute to & from work and the occasional longer run. If I zero one trip before starting a longer run, I get about 20/22mpg & have never bettered that. If you use the loud pedal consumption drops to single figures.

The 5.0SC is just so creamy smooth and the noise is sublime making the fuel consumption of little concern. Drove a couple of 4.4TDV8s before settling on the 5.0SC & haven't regretted my choice for one second Very Happy Should've been old enough to know better...doh!

Thank you all for the info, took a 5.0 for a drive yesterday, and it does blow your sock off. It will be down to the driving I suppose and it definitely tempts you to squeeze the pedal a bit. The figures I've done suggest it will cost me roughly £3.2k more per year to run than the 4.4 TDV8, but they are about £10k cheaper to buy in the autobiography spec so it's 3 years before it costs you any more, and by then it'll be over 100k miles and ready for LPG. Has anyone LPG'd a 5.0 yet or are they all to young to be tampered with?

Why would you wait for a car to turn 100K before LPGing it? VERY ODD... Thought the idea of LPG was to purchase a car, convert it and save you money whilst racking up the miles.....

Got to be a wind up... Rolling Eyes

Apparently you can't LPG the 5.0L, correct me if I'm wrong.

I simply wouldn't want to invalidate extended warranty or any dealership goodwill when the car is still of substantial value. Going by your logic people would be converting them as they left the dealership new. 100k or 3 years isn't set in stone it was the period it would take to make diesel the cost effective option. Not odd, no wind up, just common sense.
