RR TDv8 3.6 High fuel comsumption - theories

Hi guys,

I'm new on the board. I'm on rangerovers.net since 2004 or so, but when it comes to technical help (especially for diesels) there's not too much knowledge there. I hope it's better here!

I own a RR TD6 since 2004 and it's always been a pleasure to drive. 2 months ago I purchased a 2006 RR TDv6.
It's a dream to drive, but since I had it I'm dealing with extreme high fuel comsumption.

When I'm driving it on the motorway with a featherlite foot I can just get it to about 24 MPG, when I drive normal I get a combined consumption of 20 MPG. I'm not a hooligan, I don't brake all the time, I don't accelerate full pull... My TD6 has a combined consumption of 27 MPG without struggling.

I drove it on 19" winter tyres and 20" summer tyres. Both are the same, Tyre pressure is ok.

After reading some posts and forums on the internet a few things often are written:

1. Torn turbo hoses.

Just this morning I heard a sort of ''whoosh'' sound coming from the engine. This wasn't there before so I popped the hood and found one of the small hoses on the engine torn. See picture:

https://s3-eu-west-2.amazonaws.com/i.hubnu...2a9eab.jpg

On this picture the right one is still there, and the left (torn) one is already removed.

This is a close up:

Questions:
*Where does this hose come from? Where is it for? ...?

*Can this cause higher fuel consumption? Keep in mind that I drove the car for 6000 km without the ''whoosh'' sound. So it wasn't torn or just slightly

*Is it normal that it's a bit greasy on the inside?

2. Sticky brake calipers.

I have had one brake caliper sticking just one time. The right rear brake disk was smoking and the brake caliper had clearly not come lose. I had this just once and all the other times I checked all brake disks were normal temperature... Is it possible 1 or 2 calipers are just slightly sticking, causing resistance and thus higher fuel consumption?

I am determined in finding what is causing this fuel consumption, as I am reading on every board that a fuel consumption of 28 MPG should be perfectly possible with a RR TDv8.

Thanks for all your input guys, hoping to learn some stuff on here!

Just to say the figures your getting is exactly what is used to get out of my 3year tdv8 with only 25000 miles on her from what I've heard I thought that was about normal. May be wrong though I never got more than 24mpg our of mine.

Dave The difference between theory and reality is that in theory it will work.

I think 20mpg for a TDV8 driven gently is very low - I get 26mpg when driven normally on a mixture of city and motorway roads

I had a split turbo hose on mine and it did cause excess fuel consumption, so I'd definitely get your hose fixed asap 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Beyond this is alignment ok ? what about fuel filter and oil ? when was last time car was serviced?

I get about 24 mpg on average due to a lot of non motor way driving. When I do mix with motorway driving I usually average 28 or so. Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

Alignment seems fine, as the car drives perfectly straight and there is no weird tyre wear.

I'm servicing the car next week, but it's been done 25.000 km ago so I don't think this can cause the higher consumption...

Torn turbo hose

The 2 hoses shown in your photo are the Intercooler to engine inlet. A split hose can cause fuel consumption to increase but are easy and cheap (c. £36 each from Britparts) to replace. Unfortunately I had the "whoosing" sound on mine under acceleration but turned out to be the RH bottom hose connecting the turbocherger to the intercooler (c. £96 to replace) and very difficult to access. MPG wise, I get around 20mpg around town, 24/26 mixed driving and have seen 31.5mpg on a recent 200 mile trip mostly on dual carriageways. Seems most economical at 70/75mph indicated. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your input.

Are the bottom ones visible? I'm really suspecting turbo hoses to cause my problem so I want to check them all.

And is it normal that the inside of the hose is somewhat greasy? '17 Range Rover 5.0 Supercharged AB (Sold)

TDV8 whooshing

The RH bottom hose comprises about 3 inches of rubber hose (from turbocharger) with remainder metal piping and are very difficult to see let alone replace. A jubilee clip on mine had come loose and together with an earlier leaking injector return pipe meant that it was impossible to get the rubber hose tightened onto the metal pipe. Suggest you replace the top hose and check to see if this has solved the "whooshing" noise.
