mystery hose

Have just completed a service on my newly acquired td6.
There is a small diameter hose that comes up from underneath the front oil filter housing and loops around and ends above the heat shield that is at the back below the filter.
It has a barbed end on it.
Just wondering if its connects to anything.

Is it maybe the breather for the gearbox or front diff?

It could be, but I cant see what it connects to underneath the filter.

It leads down to the front diff on the passenger side, 10/10 for John Thumbs Up .
