Test Glow Plugs, ECU and Relay - Identification of parts?

Working on my prolonged starting time.

Youtube has helped with how to test glow plugs although they appear to be a Censored to get to on the FFRR, but just to check:

I have been looking in my "E" box too, which is where the glow plug ECU and relay are. Need some help identifying all the parts and also on any methods to test the function of the ECU and/or the relay. Want to check these are working before moving onto the glow plugs which require a bit more dismantling:

1. Glow Plug ECU
2. Glow Plug relay or other ?
3. Glow Plug relay or other ?

IIDTool has always given me this fault, prior to the poor starting

but confusion arises from this extract from RAVE (from changing e box fan section) ?




So is it a relay or an ECU? I will presume the former.

Now how to test if it is working OK ?

Probably nothing like the glow plug relay but this video is useful: #t=488 .

I'd say relay - just sloppy terminology calling it an ECU

Well, the connectors are nothing like the relays in the howtos, a big single post for the output power and 11 small pins for the connector, and I couldn't get it off the little plastic board it is fixed to, but with finger on the relay and ignition switched to position 2 I can feel it click, then there is a quiet electrical crackling sound.

There are lots of the same relay knocking about on eBay 2246919 72RB510 for @ £40. Good example with images:

use multimeter to earth and top of glowplug should be about 0.9ohms resistance (iirc)

you don't need to pull them to check them

Joe, the glow plug relay/ecu can be tested simply by checking that it is putting 12v to the glow plugs when you first turn on the ignition. The big red wire is the feed from the battery to the relay and there are 6 individual wires going to each glow plug so you would have to check each 1 for 12v. To test the glow plugs, disconnect the positive wire on the end and check for continuity with your multimeter from the positive terminal of the glow plug to ground. If it shows an open circuit then its faulty. However, i think you are barking up the wrong tree regarding your starting probs as it happens when hot or cold. You would be better doing a leak off test on your injectors first. Its a very simple test you can do yourself with some hose and small clear bottles. Have a look on 'you tube'. Next to check would be the fuel pumps. '04 td6 se

Thanks for the advice wats39 & dingg1.

Ran the tank dry (more or less) and filled up with fresh fuel, no change so can rule that one out too (long shot)

Mpg seems to have dropped off by 1 or 2 on this tank full, but no smoke from rear, and still running fine.

Will have to have a go at glow plugs and leak test this weekend Thumbs Up

OK, carried out glow plug test today. Just to ensure i have the science right, removed connector from glow plug relay, then connected multimeter to +ve terminal of battery and inserted -ve lead from multitester into each of the connectors for each glow plug. A reading of 12v + indicates glow plug working OK.












If this is the case, I only have two working glow plugs!! (One gave a very small current flow but I count this as broken). No wonder it is struggling to start!

Frosty this morning, 0 degrees, FFRR took nearly 15 seconds to fire up (chatata chatata ad infinitum!) so definitely glow plug related! .

It was all going so well, inlet manifold out, correct deep socket applied, then bang, the nut on the glow plug parts company with the threaded end of the glow plug, on four of them!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Really only applied medium pressure to undo, and gave some heat as well.

Guessing this is a head off job to have them drilled out?

Only saving grace is that one of the ones that wasn't working has started working, so at least I have three doing a job for now (Cylinders 1, 4 & 6) Big Cry
