Yes, it’s vital that the pinion shaft bearings run with the correct preload and the crush tube (item 12 in the diagram below) is a critical part of this : If you replace parts to the old (spline tube) design the consequence of getting the preload wrong, and the bearings failing as a result, is that the pinion could jam into the crownwheel and lock the front wheels solid. Land Rover never risked this and instead simply fitted new final drive assemblies (of the old design) until the Q041 Service Action came along in June 2008. You’d be much better getting the new design with the CV joint but, as you can see from the instructions below, the process the workshop guys have to work through to upgrade the final drive is not a simple one :

Thanks for that Phil that doesn't look like something I would want to take on. There seems to be a lot of splined tubes around so I am guessing a fair few are being replaced without any bother, I there anyone on here changed just the tube?
