BMW MD told me in the past to be careful with what screenwash was used, I think they said use organic only or something.

Here is one good reason to use some form of screenwash rather than just plain water.

This was from a few years back but the research did seem pretty conclusive. Testing vehicles that never used screen wash highlighted legionnaires bacteria in 1 out of every 5 washer bottles, but no cars with screenwash added had any legionnaire bacteria present.
