PCV valve - do I need to replace?

Hi all,

4.4 Petrol V8

My valve cover seals are leaking oil so I need to do those. It seems that perhaps what makes them leak is a problem with the PCV system on the back of the engine. So before I do the valve cover gaskets I thought I should check the PCV system.

I have had a look, and at least one of the two main PCV hoses that run from/to the cyclone separator has a hole in it. Both feel really squashy and unpleasant.

I have removed the hoses from the cyclone and removed the cyclone itself. It was quite gunked up with crud but I have flused that clean now. I will replace the hoses (the two big ones at least - all if I think I can get to them.)

Do you advise removal of the PCV valve itself? Once removed, can it be cleaned and tested?. In reading the forum lots of folk have changed them but is that necesary?

Cheers

Hey Zeus,

I ran into the a PCV valve problem as well (I was blowing smoke like a WWII tank). So I'll be replacing everything simply because it saves times from going back and changing things here and there, get it done once and fully Smile

Hi Asad.

I have stripped all my pcv system and discovered that what i thought was a valve is really just a plastic manifold to take the various hoses and joins them to the inlet manifold. I have just flushed mine through with degrease fluid and will be refitting it this weekend with a new gasket and all 4 hoses involved.
I have also flushed the cyclone as well.

Hey David,

Glad you got everything sorted, I'm still waiting for a quote on my parts from Dan at Ducksworth, soon as I get a response it'll be time to start fixing up the Rangie. Hope your weekend goes well, let me know how things workout.

The cam cover seals leak due to them going rock hard. I replaced mine when I did the cam cover gaskets. Was very suppressed how hard the seals had become. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Hi all,

Just an update. Well it has been a very fiddly job to do. Of course, when the car was built, all the PCV and cam covers would be fitted to the engine before the engine would be fitted into the car. Hence doing it with the engine in place is very awkward indeed.

My car is 2004 with 125000 miles and I reckon the PCV hoses were all original as they had the crimp type hose clips that I guess are fitted by Land Rover. I have replaced them with screw up jubilee clips. I managed to replace all 4 hoses. They all needed to be replaced as they were all holed at some point. The cyclone was blocked up with oily crud (mayo) as was the PCV housing (that I thought was a valve but is really just a manifold). I flushed these out and blew an airline through them to be sure all was good.

A new gasket on the PCV housing and cam covers together with new rubber washers/ seals on the cam cover bolts.

On examination, I think my oil leaks were more likely coming from these bolt seals rather than the the cam cover gaskets themselves.

Fingers crossed the oil leaks are over now!

Conclusions. If you need to do the PCV hoses, take the extra time and do all 4, including cleaning the PCV housing and cyclone. If one hose is gone, it is likely the others will be too and it is very difficult to inspect them in situ - but the two small diameter oil drain hoses are an absolute Censored to get at.

If you have an oil leak from the cam covers, you might just be lucky and replace the 11 bolt seals per cover will fix it. Saves a lot of time and fiddling - especially if like me, the LPG installation gets in the way of removing the covers.

Thanks for all the help and advice from forum members.

Thanks for this info. I have been humming and hawing whether it's worth doing this job for a while now due to a small leak that I have never been able to place. So these bolt seals you mention -I might consider just replacing these firstly if it's not a big job ?

Hi Shandonman

No, not to big a job. You need 8 off LYF000030 and 3 OFF LYF000050 per cover ( 2 covers). The 3 off part is fitted to the front three bolts. You will find these fit over a step of the bolt so once you have unscrewed the bolt, use a small screwdriver to break the "seal" with the cover. Then remove the seal from the bolt and fit the new seal to the bolt (warm it in hot water makes the seal more flexible).

The other 8 seals are straight forward.

I bought mine from Island 4x4, £0.50 and £0.80 each respectively.
