Got wood?

Does anyone on here buy their wood in for a log fire or the like and if so how much do you pay?

Just asking as at the moment I'm picking bits up off people and breaking them down and drying them under cover but mainly doing it as a kind of exercise to help stop the flab now I'm over the hill as it were Smile

Just when i give it to people they are always offering me money so thought it would be best to know what the going rate is as I've been offered the chance to pick up a shed load of the stuff to break down, think enough to fill the FF 7+ times cramming it all tightly in so thinking if i ask for donations of the like just to cover the chainsaw fuel it wouldn't be so bad really. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Someone round me sells it for £2.50 a net. The net is about 25x 90cm

That's the cheapest I know of. 2009 TDV8 Vogue SE - Bonatti Grey

Is that about 5-10kg then roughly?

I guess it depends on the wood type as well Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Yep that's soft wood.

I tend to source it from others without buying it unless I run low. Which won't be too long away as we have it on most days. 2009 TDV8 Vogue SE - Bonatti Grey

The going rate for logs in west wales is about £70 per cubic metre and that's a mix of hard and soft wood cut to your required size

How does my hard wood compare to your hard wood?

Well Mark if your ever near warrington or runcorn let me know Smile

£70 for a builders bag isn't bad as that must be about 5-600kg i reckon.

And David, your SOFT wood doesn't look too bad really Smile

Seriously though thats exactly how i want my next house to be behind the garage Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Refuse to pay for wood at the moment with so much lying around. My chainsaw has been working overtime and I've got enough to leave for a year or so to dry out properly.

Digressing a fraction, I was after a back up chainsaw and bought one of these this week. It only arrived this morning but I'll let you know how it fairs as I've got a 100ft Beach tree to cut up Saturday.
Terrific value, might be rubbish but could be the bargain of the year.

I was told don't burn it for two years, which is one reason I stock so much - as green wood is cheaper and I have the space.

I've always just covered it to be honest and in the past my gran folks and parents would just have a decent stock at the sides of the ingle nook and just empty one side at a time and then refil as by the time you got to the other side it was fully dried out.

That saw looks a good spec, good amount of torque and £10 more gets you 2 more chains as well which is a bargain! I'm seeing if they allow a discount for local pick-up as they are just round the corner from me so may pop by later, but will try a local place and see if they have anything they can price match but for something thats not going to be used all day like an arborist but more likely just a few hours each weekend to break the big stuff down for mauling.

My nans last one was like this one below, although she still kept 2 bags of coal they never really got used to much.

I may even still have access to a small kiln drum for making charcoal, by small i mean about 3 tonnes of the stuff at once over a few days!

Anyway XXX have got back to me and said pickup gets £10 off the price if i pickup so i think i'll get the one with 3 chains when im passing tomorrow and use the bar and chain off the mac if it will fit, when i need a shorter bar Smile

sweet, chopping wood this weekend and out collecting it from all the blown over trees i reckon there will be Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Have you considered contacting tree surgeons/landscape gardeners? They often are happy to deliver wagon loads of cut up trees and dump it for you for nothing. It costs them money to take to the dump otherwise.
It's how I used to get it.

Have you phoned local suppliers? They will tell you exactly how much wood costs to buy.
I have been lucky in that I have not had to buy wood for over 2 years. We have had to take 2 trees down and they are still keeping us warm... Will need to stock up for next winter tho'..
Kurt.... That is an impressive length of wood, although it does look a bit thin.. Previously..

Cheers NDF, never thought of that and I know an arby as well!

Didn't think to check with local suppliers as often prices quoted change when they are delivered for such things so thought I'd see what the people on the ground were paying Smile FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
