Apparently battery drain is the amp?!? Best option?

Hi all,
According to garage the battery issue I was having is the amp (vse 2008) anyone recommend best action here as new one from LR is 699 plus fitting!! Part number LR039436 could I chance a second hand one from salvage? Or could it be repaired? They say likely a relay not allowing switch off.

The only weird thing to me that remains unanswered is over Xmas I didn't lock the car and the battery seemed fine!? Cannot see how that's connected!? But they said there was a 15amp drain coming from amp intermittently when tested and when unplugged no drain!?

i would run the FF with the amp disconnected for a few weeks to see if it actually is the cause...

Are they a trusted garage in your opinion Nick? I ask because there will be many more components fed by that feed and unplugging the amp may just take out a link in the chain... Thumbs Up

Both good points...
The Garage is reputable (can I say who??) in Guildford.
Does my leaving the car unlocked have any baring at all cos I cannot seem to ignore the difference it made.

If I disconnect amp, what will that actually effect?

Also they did say once they disconnected amp they couldn't get it to do it again and were hopeful it might go away!

the FF has a maze of ecus that 'talk' to each other so the process of disconnecting the amp might have affected another ecu into working properly...just a theory ...

I would be wary about what a Main Dealer tells you. To find a specific source of battery drain is very time consuming over a significant period of time. I find it hard to believe a Dealer would spend the necessary time and might just opt for a best guess after a nominal investigation.
The only way to find the drain is to disconnect the -ve cable from the battery, install an ammeter with a scale 0 to 10A between the end of the cable disconnected and the battery -ve terminal and then pull each fuse on the car one by one and after allowing the car to go to sleep each time record the reading on the ammeter.
Most readings with fuses removed should read zero, after the car goes to sleep.
Eventually you will find a fuse or fuses that show a current flow probably in mA that don't go away when the car is asleep.
Record these as with all other fuses.
Once you have checked every fuse you then need to determine what exactly is fed from each of the offending fuses and act accordingly.
If you need an idea of a convenient ammeter set up let me know and I will dig out mine and photograph and post it.

^ I find this convenient for checking battery drain.
The ammeter is a N48CY from Maplins, as below, fitted with a couple of 500mm leads and crocodile clips.
I fit a 10A fuse in the ammeter fuse holder to allow it to operate.
I connect the clips, pass the ammeter out thro the top edge of the bonnet, lay the ammeter on the bottom of the windscreen and close the bonnet.
Then start pulling fuses one by one and recording the results.

I have just bought an amp off ebay as it was causing similar issues (QXK500105) apparently, I have taken a chance for £30 as my one has a fault not supplying the lower passenger door speakers.

Once I have my original out I am taking it to this place

I neither have time nor ability to do this myself sadly...
Paul, Cartronics are 2 mins from one our offices so its in for the day next Weds.. they seem pretty confident on diagnosing the issue before paying for an amp or anything else.

Appreciate all the feedback and ideas and I will keep you posted!
