Just a guess but press and hold the retract button? Works for the sunroof...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It sounds like your steps are turned off. Here are the operation instructions, try the very last bit.

Good question, I don't really know as I have never played with one. I would presume that like with other manufactures there is a way of selecting the aux ( position 1 ) and ignition (position 2) using the stop start button, maybe without putting your foot on the brake pedal and holding the button for a number of seconds, this is the procedure in our Volvo. Looks like my steps were turned off and once I re activated them according to Jon's instructions, they are working again!
