i feel your pain brother, i bought an 04 4.4 v8 in june for £6k, i reckon it owes me about £9K so far cos as quick as i solve one fault another appears but its part of the 'fun' if you can fix it yourself, i must admit though i wouldn't fancy stripping down the engine. there are a few companies that will put in a second hand engine with a warranty but i would investigate every possibility before replacing or repairing yours. do the diagnostics tell you anything?

Google "BMW 4.4 misfire", it seems to be quite a common problem and not necessarily as catastrophic as you may think.

I hope you get it sorted without an engine strip down. 03 4.4 V8 petrol / lpg. 1st of many hopefully. I love my Rangie

Awful experience you have. This is my third second hand FFRR and I never had a major problem. I must say that I bought the last one for 6.5 k through this forum and the only thing I had to do was a small airco repair and a full gearbox flush, car drives and runs great. Seems very reliable. Just telling this to make you aware of the fact that these cars are great, if you not run into a "mondaymorning car" and they exist, every marque has a few examples. Wish you strength with yours, maybe it is not that serious.

especially when running LPG, i guess its the same on LPG as petrol, all breathers ok, vacuum etc, there is a tonne of pipework on these engines that could cause a problem. have you got an allcomms or any diagnostic kit?

main dealer for about £100 as a last ditch should tell you whats wrong at least, as long as they find the problem in an hour......

Thanks all, it's good to know I'm not the only one who has issues! It's been on the diagnostics and it shows multiple miss fires but particulary on number 2. The chap I take it to swapped the coil pack from one to two but the issue remained first time but second time it followed it to number 1. Maybe, fingers and toes crossed, he mixed the coil packs on the first test and it's something as simple as that. It was running so well after the service as well, really smooth, exactly as you want it to. T55

its always scary taking a car to any garage as a simple fault can cause the same symptoms as a major fault requiring a rebuild, and then when they discover the simple fault half way through the rebuild, i cant imagine they would say anything

From what you say i think you would have got more of a warning if a major mechanical part has failed, my money is on electrical as you hope for, could even be something to do with the service, make sure you report back once they solve it, good luck and buy an all comms

Well I have the car back, again! And I must say it is running better than it ever has. Ended up having a full coil pack change, so quite as drastic as an engine strip out but still expensive. Not made my mind up if I'm going to keep it though as really don't want even more major bills. But I have just about had every major part changed in the last 12 months so...

Keep or sell (head or heart)? T55

Keep. What else is going to give you so much fun. I bought my 04 4.4 back in May with 100k on the clock for £7k. Its now coming up to 125k and yes, its had some routine maintenance - probably cost me £2.5k to catch up on previous owners problems beyond a regular oil and filter change.

The way I look at it - yes I could spend £30k on a newish 4x4 from a korean, german or japanese company. Put 75k on it in 3 years and what will it be worth - £8k ? £9k tops? I'd lose £21k in depreciation alone before thinking of the lost benefit of that money in the first place

My RR will be worth £4k, maybe 5 with 175k on the clock after 3 years - (if I keep it that long but as it happens the missus is getting it when it turns 130k) so doing the bangernomics - £3k depreciation (a grand a year) - plenty of money to maintain it well and enjoy it much more than something non descript. The way I look at it, I have £21k depreciation money that I'm not financing, not paying interest on, and not losing interest on, and I only need to draw it down if something happens.

At the end of the day these cars cost £50-£70k new 10 or more years ago - running them is a vocation, and a pleasure. Life is too short not to enjoy and have what you really want. Current Fleet:-

apologies for linking to another forum, but found after a quick google

i wonder if this is similar to your problem starting after your service

KEEP, if you like the car then keep it and try and do a few more jobs yourself as i think if i had all the jobs on mine done at an independent, my rebuilt transmission, new torque converter, front suspension legs, hand brake shoes and mechanism, oil and filter, gearbox cooler and pipes, breather pipes, low range switch panel repair.. theres probably loads more i would be looking at nearer £5k + spent in 6 months.

you might have got away with a single coil pack or maybe even reseating the ones you had but a garage hasnt normally got time to mess around for hours, they will change everything thats likely to be suspect and away you go happy ish.
like nick says, forget residual value, it was once worth £50k, if it looks nearly perfect and drives well, then you are driving a £50k car. as somebody once said, its not a £7k car. its a £50k car for £7k

i would definitely get yourself some diagnostics if you are keeping it though

That pretty much bang on described the issue I had with mine. I am using it for a work trip tomorrow so that will be pretty much what I base my decision on. I don't really have a great deal of spare time to work on it myself so have to rely on a indi to carry out the work.

Fingers crossed it goes well tomorrow and I convince myself to keep it. Thanks all for the support and suggestions... T55

United States 2006 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Alveston Red

Thread resurrection -

I recently picked up my nearly rust free 06 SC for $3500, the shop I got it through is owned by a friend of mine so he did a ton of little things getting it dialed in and put new tires (of my choice) on too so it went out the door at $4500. It still needs some stuff but nothing I can't do myself (I think) and if all of the additional costs add up to a few $k I'll still be way ahead of where I would have been had I gotten something like a Land Cruiser or similar Lexus with more miles that probably also would have needed some TLC and likely would have been patience testing with all the rust that vehicles around here tend to have. I told my wife before we picked it up to expect $5k in work over the next few months and she agreed that for as nice a vehicle as this is with only 120k miles on it that it would be worth that cost and effort.

I guess what I'm saying is if I end up with $10k into it after a year it will likely still be a better value than most trucks that aren't nearly as nice to drive and would almost certainly be higher mileage and may also be older. I also don't have any car payments which is nice. Strangely my insurance went up quite a bit over a much newer sports car which really surprised me. Apparently because it weighs nearly 6,000 pounds the potential for it to do significant damage to anything I hit puts it in a higher bracket Rolling Eyes As long as that Lucas guy doesn't show up and crash my party I'm going to enjoy this thing for at least the next 5 years for $2k/yr or less which is more affordable than the last three trucks I've owned.
