Just a click, but no start

Replaced battery last week with new Bosch S5.

On re-tightening the negative battery clamp I realised it was spinning on the terminal and not gripping. I took it off and gave the clamp a squeeze with plyers and refitted. Seems tight now.

The battery seems fine voltage wise with FBH working on remote and volts at 14.5V when running (on 753 diagnostic screen, or 14.7V on IIDTool) and heated seats etc all hot.

On occasions when I get in and turn the key I get a 'click' but no turnover. Try immediately again and it fires up.

I have checked that both the positive and neg terminals are tight.

I did add a CTEK link to charger to the positive terminal but surely this can't be upsetting the battery.

It sounds like a duff connection and was going to buy a new earth lead from Dan to see if this solves the problem.

Any other ideas?

G

Hi have seen that post but this 'click' has only started since I changed the battery.

I don't touch the gear selector but re-try the key to position I then it starts.

Cheers

I would concentrate on the possibility of a bad connection to the battery, either one or both terminals.
If a terminal is slack the best way to tighten them is to slide a thin piece of copper about half the circumference wide between the post and the clamp and then tighten as normal. Lead battery clamps are notorious for stretching and working loose.
Piece of 15mm copper pipe wall is suitable. Thumbs Up

My old TDV8 used to do that. In the end it turned out to be a dodgy solenoid on the side of the starter. For expediency I got the starter refurbished by a place in Birmingham. they did it while I waited and it cost me 60 quid. Was fine after that.

New brushes and new contacts in the solenoid. About a quid's worth of parts and it can stop the beast in its tracks Laughing

Oh, and on the TDV8 the starter's a bit of a Censored to get out. Sorry. Embarassed

Will try the copper surround to terminals first.

It has a full LR warranty so if it is the starter I am sure that will be covered. Only done 47K and I do think it was me feckin' about with the battery. Big Cry

I had a similar click problem, but it was hardly a click at all, it turned out that although the neg battery terminal was tight, it wasn't bedded down on the post properly, so looking at it now it has about 3mm of post coming out the top, I then tapped down the posi too to make sure. the terminal was tight on the spanner but not holding with enough force to carry the amps. it went iffy if a had the headlamps on or had been leaving ign on for about 15 mins etc.
if you suspect starter, get a friend to hold key on start posn, and with a hammer give the main body of the starter a generous tap. not too hard to damage it, but a proper tap. if it springs into life, then that's your problem....
