having only had my 3.6 since DEC, my 1st run back from the dealers cross country on Yorkshire's lanes ( 80 miles) I averaged 28.5 mpg

Since then, normal running around all on b roads & back roads etc + trips into town I'm averaging 25.8 mpg

Normal driving my my 3.6 gets me 26 mpg with a relatively light foot (round Manchester and on the M60)

I suspect I would see less than 18mpg from a 5.0

I do 20k miles pa so the diesel was the sensible option and I couldn't stretch to a 4.4

As for problems, the 3.6 seems very reliable - mine has now done 90k miles (25k with me) with minor issues.

I full expect to get another 90k out of it with little more than regular servicing and preventative maintenance (the key being mechanical sympathy and preventative maintainence - if you're aware there is an issue, sort it before it goes bang...) 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

5.0 its a dream to drive....

Ignoring the mpg question for the moment, I would report that the ride on my later model 4.4TDV8 had a far better ride quality than my earlier 3.6 due to the active dampers. At your mileage the mpg really is less of an issue. I do 25k per annum and so service and fuel costs start to be more important. At 10k I would buy what your heart says is right. Me I would have a 5.0 in a heartbeat!

As has been said before a few times the SC can be cheaper to keep running due to the lack of turbos, troublesome diesel injectors, dpf etc, and it was a toss up when i got mine, but i chose the 3.6 tdv8, at the time the 5.0 and 4.4 were completely above budget, so it was tdv8 vs 4.2sc.

Now i would have a 5.0 in a heartbeat, i too only do about 10k a year and quite a lot of that is towing, so really diesel would be the obvious choice but the smooth power and sound of the petrol would sway me even at under 20mpg, which would be my best/average as i have a heavy foot as my 23mpg ave in the tdv8 indicate.

Just have to save up for a bit and really i can live with my rather nice 3.6.......its a hard life being a ff owner...  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Based on what you have written I have decided to restrict the choice to two cars, the cheap 2006 3.6 and the "crazy" choice of the 2010 5.0.

If I rationally think I would go for the 2006 and in a couple of years time (the car shouldn't depreciate that much at this price, ie £20K) go for a used 4.4 with the new chassis.
If I let my heart to decide I should probably go with the 5.0 as the fuel consumption shouldn't really be so different for an annual average of max 10K miles. The downside here would be the higher depreciation (even higher than any diesel version of a 2010 model).

On Saturday I will test both models and let you know about the final choice.

Eventhough it may sound odd, I think this is really sensible indeed.

In fact, I am seriously considering replacing my mint 3.6L TDV8 for a 5.0L, only if I fall in love when I drive it, as the TDV8 is lovely to drive and perfect (for me) in every aspect.

What about a 2005/2006 4.2 supercharged? You can find them at a good price and with more than £20K price difference compared to a 2010 5.0.
Are the two engines so different in terms of power and mpg?

Have only had my 4.2 supercharged (2008) for a couple of months but gotta say its a total dream. 22 mpg driven carefully on a run. Circa 18mpg overall if careful, drops to 16mpg when you press the loud pedal ( as as has been suggested earlier, why wouldn't you?)

If I could've afforded the 5.0L I would deffo have gone for that.

Did look hard at 2010 vs 2008 but couldn't for the life of me see tha I would be getting circa £20k extra of value...
