Not wanting to be shot down in flames here but...
If I remember rightly BMW diesels did suffer from hot start problems. I have a 320TD Tourer with the same issue although I've never bothered to get round to finding out what my exact fault is. It starts within two turns when cold yet takes 8+ when warm or hot.
I did read on BMW forums 320D and 330D in similar situations as mine and in addition to faulty fuel pumps, cam shaft sensors were also found to be blamed on occasions. Maybe worth looking into this internet wise. I am no mechanic by a long shot - but I read you can test it when hot by spraying some freezer spray on the sensor and see if it solves the problem.

Thanks guys for all of this - I'll feel bit more informed when I take the RR to the mechanic after New Year. When I mentioned to him he did say about checking the sensor and trying a fresh one to see if it made a difference. That not on the BMW experience is definitely worth following up as it is bound to be documented somewhere on their forum. I'll post how I get on by mid January - what a time of year to be incurring bills on my RR

I had the same problem a few years back on my X5.

I changed the cam shaft sensor and all was good.

Thanks for that advice - how much can I expect to pay for a camshaft sensor?

I got the warm start problem sorted. Two fuel injectors needed replaced.

Looks like someone was right  Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!!
