Intermittent battery problem

I hate electrical faults! 2011 SC with no problems until last week. Went to start car and sounded like battery was dead, lights on dash blinking like crazy and a clicking noise coming the the engine bay and I was not doing anything except sitting in car. Got it jumped and drove to auto parts store ready to replace the battery and he said battery was fine. It started right up and was fine until last night and it did it again. Lights on dash flashing and clicking sound. Got it jumped again and today it has been starting right up. Has anyone ever had this problem?? I am 3-4 hrs to the closest dealer so always try to solve at home before the drive. Thx! Mike

How old is the battery ?

I'd replace it anyway every 5 years - the FFRR is quite temperamental where batteries are concerned. They can appear fine, but once replaced, all sorts of other niggles seem to go away.

Check the terminals to the battery and also from the battery to the starter motor, and the earth strap from the engine to the body. Make sure you have good connections for all of these. Sure sounds like something is a bit loose....

Check the battery voltage between the terminals with engine off (you want +13.5 volts at least) - battery OK, and engine running (+14.5 volts) - this will confirm alternator OK .

Hi Mike, can you supply a bit more info.

Like how often do you drive your RR and when you do drive, how long do you drive for? 2007 TDV8 Lux

Yes, thank you. I drive it every day but we live in a small town in the mountains (3,600 people) so I have driven it 2,200 miles in 5 months. Tonight it would not start again and the light came on the dash , the green mountain light with "Lo" on it. I waited about 15 seconds and it started and briefly the "Gearbox fault" light came on then went away and I drove it no problems. It just started last week and as I mentioned, the battery seems to be fine, cranks over fast and starts right up. Mike

Hi again Mike and with that low mileage and I suspect it’s lots of short trips, you could probably do yourself a big favour and get a SMALL multi stage battery charger and use it whenever possible.

If you go that way, charge your battery for at least 10 hours at a time.

By do this, you may be able to recondition the battery to the point where you don’t need to replace it.

Also, getting a battery charger would probably work out cheaper than a drive to the dealer. 2007 TDV8 Lux

Mike, too late now... But out of interest, did you put the 'hood' in "service mode"?

I replaced mine last week, and it's the bigger battery
Followed instructions in the wiki, and thought it wasn't too bad,
Much easier than I was expecting.

Good to read your sorted . Alcohol and eBay is never a good mix

Sorry, only just spotted this thread.

I had the same symptoms and an auto-electrician told me it was the alternator. It was kicking out less than 12v when running.

£500 later and the symptom persisted. So new battery it was, and all fine now.

Thanks to this forum for tips on how to replace the battery - I put the bonnet into service mode and all was straight forward.

E 4 Guy. no we did not put the hood in service mode. The battery has to be lifted from the right side (if you are facing front) and then lifts up and out. It is very tight and we cracked some of the plastic moulding just above it to the back. The guys at my auto parts store pulled it out and the new one popped right in. Mike

I'm having this at the moment.

Get in and try to start the car.

Click. Nothing. Dash comes up as normal - no warning lights.

Turn off (by pressing the start button again)

Try again and it starts.

It seems better if I have the auto lights in the off position.
