Sai small pipe?

Hi all,

Ive had been googling for ages & am still stuck so any help is greatly appreciated!

Ive recently bought an 02 4.4v8 L322 but the water pump failed & has just been replaced by a local "specialist" but before I took it in I noticed a crack in a vacuum pipe (black with blue stripe) going to a silver thing on the left hand side of the engine which I now think is the sai non return valve (if Ive read rave correctly).

On picking the rr up they said they had lots of problems with rough idle & revving, non of which were apparent before taking it in. They said they found a vacuum hose missing from the air filter & found 1 incorrectly fitted to the silver thing (they did not know what it was!) so they fitted that to the air filter & left the silver thing open.

I have been looking all afternoon for info to go fully prepared before I go back tomorrow but what they have done cant be right can it? Where should the small pipe from the air intake go?

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Yeh I realised after I posted that it is pretty hard to understand what im on about, even for me..

Hi sorry for the delay getting the pics, weve got a 7 week old daughter who is taking up most of my time hehe.

Ok here are some pics

This is the silver thing which I believe is to do with the sai system, ive circled the open connection:

Before the garage did the work this connection had a black pipe with a blue stripe connected to it, the pipe went from here upto & then under the acoustic cover.

However the garage have now connected the black/blue pipe to the small connection on the air intake, circled in red again on this pic (sorry for the quality):

I spoke to the garage yesterday & they said that the vehicle was apparently not revving properly if you gave it full throttle in neutral with the pipe connected as it was... The rr drove spot on before I took it to them & I noticed no issues with revs (granted I didnt boot it in neutral!)

According to them because it has a BRC gas system on the sai system may not need to be connected as every conversion is different???

I asked what was originally connected to the air intake prior to them removing it for the water pump change, they said they didnt know...... Is this correct as its starting to seem like they are taking the

!

I also found this pipe not connected to anything, which was down near the air intake small connection area

So my questions are :

Should the sai syatem be connected as it was?
What is normally connected to the small pipe on the air intake?

I havent tried moving anything myself yet as I have been billed for labour by them investigating the revving issue & if they have goofed up I will be asking for them to refund the labour charge.

If they have deliberately connected the pipe incorrectly does this mean they could be trying to cover up a bigger mistake as they managed to flatten the battery while they had it & then had to get the immobiliser code from LR...

Sorry for the mammoth post but any help would be great

Hopefully this picture may help (taken from Landyzone post on water pump replacement):

The blue and white pipe (on the left of the photo) does go onto the SAI valve (LR call it Pulse Air Injection) and comes from the solenoid sitting on top of the engine.

The small pipe on the air intake (in the centre of the photo, below the larger pipe) runs to the back of engine and turns 90 degrees and runs under the battery tray.

The mystery pipe could well be the pipe that runs to the valve attached to the front of the right hand cylinder head. Pictured here below the guys index finger:

Given that the valve has to be removed to get to the water pump bolt then could be the reason why it's no longer connected, they forgot to put it back or it broke on removal.

I will get them to take the acoustic cover off tomorrow & look at where the disconnected pipe is going.

By any chance do you know what the valve is used for, could that have been the cause of the rough idling & have they bypassed it?

Will see what they have to say & what they are prepared to do before I name & shame them, reckon I wont be using them again though!

That valve is the purge valve for the EVAP system. If that mystery pipe is the one that should be connected to the valve then it might explain the rough running as you will be getting excess air all the time into the throttle body.
If it's broken and won't go back on try pinching it shut as a temporary measure to see if things improve.

The weird thing is it appears to be running fine at the moment although I havent taken it on any long runs yet, but I know things are incorrectly connected & that 2 parts of the system are open (sai valve & the mystery pipe).

Im really concerned now that they have done the water pump & I just hope they havent broken/bodged anything else!
