Vehicle Trackers

I have been toying with the idea of having a tracker fitted for a while. Im interested in whether or not it affects the insurance premium in a real world scenario not just heresay scenario, whether they are actually any good / effective and what companies offer such services or equipment. I am guessing that it would have to be fitted by a 'enter accreditation here' type outfit for it to be valid for insurance. Has anybody any experience or knowledge of these things ?

i have a tracker horizon installed in my vehicle. My insurer would not offer insurance without it and it did bring the price down after talking to their customer service. It has always given me piece of mind and it works well as when my car was taken on the back of an AA truck i got a call from the tracker company after a few minutes of it being on the back of the truck due to the fact the vehicle was moving with the engine running. Im just hoping i never have to use the tracker due to a theft! I would never have another car now without one fitted.

Interesting stuff, nice to hear someone on here has got 1 Thumbs Up
How much did it cost you and what was the deal with having it fitted, did it have to go far away or was it done on site etc, do you have anything to track it with or is it the company only who can do that ? What sort of difference in insurance premium did it make ? £2.76p pa Laughing Do you have to pay an annual charge ?

Cheers

I have a tracker fitted and it was an insurance requirement. Peace of mind was a bonus. Fitted at home and I still can't find where they fitted it:-).

Reasonable price I think but can't remember what that was at the moment. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

I have them on both my cars
5% discount on insurance £77.00 each per yer to operate. One was fitted at home, the other was already on the car and I took over the subscription.
I think all expensive cars will have to eventually.

Likewise, I have one on both cars and seems to work well. For the recent RR, I got the LR MD installed kit (Land Rover branded Trackstar). Fitting was £400 and subscription to the service £400 for 3 years, so that's £260 per year for 3 years all in - seems pricey but that's much less than the extra premium my insurer was asking if I didn't have one, so a no-brainer, and also for the peace of mind.. Norman

Mine has a tracker but I haven't actviated it since i borught it.

My Insuance company hasnt asked for one to be fitted or anything like that.

If people of only saving 5% that would save me £30/year and I'd guess it would be moe than this to activate. Then with your additional cost to get it fitted may be worth looking at other insurance companies. 2009 TDV8 Vogue SE - Bonatti Grey

My insurance company didn't insist but I wanted piece of mind - I have had a couple of cars nicked and its not nice.

I sold a 911 a few years ago and the guy that bought it was only 24 and his insurance would'nt let him drive it away without a tracker so it was fitted on my drive whilst we went to the bank so sort payment.

Another story - a friend of mine's wife was pushed over in a car park and her keys snatched from her hand and her RRS sport stolen. Fortunately she had a tracker and they launched the police helicopter which was able to pick it up within minutes and they dumped the car without any damage. They got away but he got the car back without a claim on his insurance.

Thats understandable on a newer car like yours and Gaz's motorhome but on mine thats worth possibly about £12k-13k and an insurance premium of £600 a year the saving don't add up to make it worth while.

If i had a couple of hundred quid spare i would look into it but im SWMBO would have different ideas for it!

If it did get stolen im sure i would be on the phone paying what ever they wanted to active it to find it. Confused 2009 TDV8 Vogue SE - Bonatti Grey

We also have a Tracker fitted on our 2003 V8. It was installed when we bought the car and we had the ownership transferred to us. I think we get around 10% discount on the Insurance and have to pay something like £150 a year to keep it activated.

This is the one we have installed: http://www.tracker.co.uk/products/tracker-locate/

Certainly the chances of an older car being stolen are less - but often the reason for stealing a two tonne 4 x 4 is to do some kind of bank / post office job. I've toyed with the idea of "would I really want it back" especially the jag with some toe rag racing it round the streets of Birmingham.

Hi

My insurer (Axa) insisted on a tracker due to the value of the vehicle as it was purchased new, but guessing that now 2 years later and the vehicle worth considerably less, they probably wont insist but as it is installed and annual subs are reasonable I will keep it anyway. I think it was mandatory as value was over 50k.

cheers

I guess these trackers use GPS for positioning and GSM for communication.
What if the bad guys snatching the car can disable the GSM communication with some type of GSM jammers?
Or if car is taken to some basement, underground concrete structure/garage where GPS cannot recieve signal? 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue MY12

Another story.

My mate had his JCB nicked from a building site in Mansfield. The tracker pinged 8 weeks later when it was taken out of a container in Dubai!

The signal was disabled whilst in the steel container !!

the villan had a couple of other cars in there too.
