My understanding is that the signals from the Tracker unit can't be jammed and can be picked up in containers or even underground! This is from the web site of the one we are subscribed to:

Patented VHF technology to find stolen vehicles even when they are hidden in metal containers or underground car parks

The combination of 3 methods of location tracking (VHF, GSM and GPS) provides Europe wide coverage

Dual technology and signal jamming detection to stop criminals using GPS/GSM jammers to block the tracking device

In-built motion sensors to identify unauthorised movement

It all depends on the tracking system you use.

Some use GPS tracking which is basically a sim card in a device that can send and receive a text message to send location from a gps aerial in the vehicle. These systems tend to be for fleet managers that want to monitor their fleets. We have them on company vans as an insurance requirement and as long as you can access the internet you can log in and see where your vehicles are. We can also lock/unlock doors, flash lights sound alarms etc from the pc. These tend to cheaper systems but the drawbacks are that if the vehicle is stolen the police can't access the tracker system and have to rely on you or a call centre relaying the vehicle location. Also because they are GSM based they can be jammed or lose signal in car parks containers etc.

The other tracking systems use VHF or UHF technology. They don't operate all the time. If your vehicle is stolen you ring the call centre or they will call you in suspicious circumstances, vehicle moving with engine off, out of hours movement etc and once an incident is confirmed they will switch on the system and alert the police. The advantage of this system is the police vehicles are equipped with receivers to pick up the signal from the stolen car, as they get closer it gets louder and indicates direction but i believe they have to be within a certain range to receive the signal. I don't think the police in say Glasgow would be able to track your car if it had got to Manchester before you reported it. However there is a good chance Manchester patrol cars would hear the tracker and investigate. As this system can't be blocked i believe recovery rates are very good, the figure of 98% springs to mind.

There are benefits and downfalls of both systems for ultimate peace of mind then more expensive probably means more success rate but if you just want to satisfy an insurance requirement and are happy to wait for a payout in a worst case scenario then go cheapest available

Mine came with one the previous owner had fitted. It is only a tracker retrieve, so if its nicked they can find it, however i have had a monitor fitted in my old m3 which did what it said on the tin and they would contact you if anything was determined to be out of order, the retrieve doesnt offer this as far as i can find.

I found the paperwork in the docs pac with the car, gave them a ring and hey presto it was registered in my name, I pay an anual subs of about 130 i think whch is good piece of mind.

Its not a requirement for my insurance and i dont get a discount with my current insurer, but others did offer money off but were still more than swiftcover..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I have fitted a tracker to mine. It runs on a PAYG sim so costs me peanuts to run. It will alarm when the interior light comes on, ignition on, speed, location, vibration, or loss of power. I can track it online or via text message. I can send a message to the car to turn off the fuel pump and can ring the car the listen in. I am testing the microphone this evening as I'm still finishing off the install. I have a sounder to fit so that I can hear the confirmation from the remote control when activated or deactivated but I will run it in silent mode to not attract attention.
