it could be the right time to change the thermostat, should a correct cap not sort it. fairy liquid suds on paintbrush is a quick leak detector, to save you burning your earhole -should it vent in anger!

if the radiator is getting hot and the engine temp is not rising above 105 degrees would this not indicated the thermostat is working correctly?

I'm no expert but i seem to recall hearing that a HGF under rare circumstances may exhibit signs of allowing combustion gasses into the coolant (but not oil) thereby raising the pressure in the system.

Katash, you are correct HGF can happen between cylinders and water galleries, cylinders and oil galleries, oil galleries and water galleries or all 3.

i am thinking of getting one of these kits to just try and rule out any gases in the coolant, has anyone ever used one on the M62 engine before?

Matt. I wouldn't get a kit. I had a test done soon after I got mine. The result from the garage was not good, but had no signs go HGF. 3years later and still no issues. Apparently the chemical fluid can degrade over time??? I would get a proper test with a propper gas monitor. Might be something to do with the coolant being glycol based? Just my 2p worth. I would put the right cap on first then see what happens. You may find once 200 cap fitted you get other water leaks due to the increase in pressure and age of coolant system. I'm ordering the 200 rated cap from BMW tomorrow as land rover don't supply it. I have replaced the majority of the cooling system over the last 3 years.

I wouldn't lose sleep yet. The facts are the car runs well and is showing no physical signs of HGF. You do have an underrated pressure cap on your tank which is leaking. Work with the facts and not what ifs. I never got the HGF thing out of my mind and took a lot of joy out of the car. Dont go down the same road I did. So did the 200 cap work? I am haveing simulate problems and mine has a 140 cap from landrover.
