Bizzarely lists the same part numbers for both the 3.0 td6 and the 4.4 v8, go figure......

edit I stand corrected, the Higher pressure cap is listed for Vin unto 1A001049 the part number is, PCD100200L for the 200 marked cap. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

it could be the right time to change the thermostat, should a correct cap not sort it. fairy liquid suds on paintbrush is a quick leak detector, to save you burning your earhole -should it vent in anger!
i have same v8 i will have look at my number when she gets home, and its cooled down. ie tomorrow.

if the radiator is getting hot and the engine temp is not rising above 105 degrees would this not indicated the thermostat is working correctly?

I'm no expert but i seem to recall hearing that a HGF under rare circumstances may exhibit signs of allowing combustion gasses into the coolant (but not oil) thereby raising the pressure in the system.

I also recall seeing a testing kit that you fit to the expansion tank that will detect said gasses.

Otherwise maybe a failing water pump.

Katash, you are correct HGF can happen between cylinders and water galleries, cylinders and oil galleries, oil galleries and water galleries or all 3.

The kit you are referring to is a block test kit 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

i am thinking of getting one of these kits to just try and rule out any gases in the coolant, has anyone ever used one on the M62 engine before?

Matt. I wouldn't get a kit. I had a test done soon after I got mine. The result from the garage was not good, but had no signs go HGF. 3years later and still no issues. Apparently the chemical fluid can degrade over time??? I would get a proper test with a propper gas monitor. Might be something to do with the coolant being glycol based? Just my 2p worth. I would put the right cap on first then see what happens. You may find once 200 cap fitted you get other water leaks due to the increase in pressure and age of coolant system. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

I'm ordering the 200 rated cap from BMW tomorrow as land rover don't supply it. I have replaced the majority of the cooling system over the last 3 years.

New water pump before I purchased the car
New radiator.
New top hose assembly
New temp sensors
New coolant tank
New coolant cap
New rear engine coolant pipes
New transmission cooler thermastat

I'm going to give the higher rated cap a go, but just hoping nothing else gives way because of the increase in pressure. To be honest I'm really worried about it as this issue has come from no where really. No signs of the car getting too hot or over pressuring of the coolant system, so totally out of the blue. Car drives perfectly absolute no loss of power or performance, no error messages or warnings sorted I'm the ECU.

I wouldn't lose sleep yet. The facts are the car runs well and is showing no physical signs of HGF. You do have an underrated pressure cap on your tank which is leaking. Work with the facts and not what ifs. I never got the HGF thing out of my mind and took a lot of joy out of the car. Dont go down the same road I did. just to follow up, I do have the 140 cap I checked top and underneath yesterday. mines ok. (2002 vCool
on the head gasket check, talk to an indy, they have a fluid detecting kit. you basically draw the air inside tank out that has come from coolant evaporation. and observe the colour change. its expensive stuff. snap on do a kit. it only takes 10 mins. there was an episode of wheeler dealers a long time back where he did a check.
here is a typical test. only wish he'd used a petrol engine those disco boys, love a diesel!

this should not be a definitive test but an indication of what to think about doing next....

head gaskets are a huge job. toolset required. and hours of time!
