@ Mick, I hate standing with all the dross at a fuel pump, and queuing to pay - so tend to leave it as long as possible between fills - max fill and max miles stretched as far as reasonably possible. Thumbs Up

United Kingdom 2014 Range Rover Vogue SDV8 Luxor

Well I bottled it again.......
I have a can in the boot with 5 litres in it, the zero lines ----- came on quite soon this morning and I drove 36 miles - yes 36 miles without any stuttering coughing or anything ?
I approached a garage (and I didn't expect to get that far) that I know is the last one for at leased 10 - 12 miles so I pulled in and filled up!

Back to my original question
"Has anyone ever ran out?"

I'm trying to but can't seem to manage it!

England 2006 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.2 SC V8 Buckingham Blue

I ran out with 60 miles to empty (at midnight, had to get the missus to come out with lawnmower fuel can). Probably the balance pump issue. Even if I get the pump fixed will never trust it again. Makes the large 104 ltr tank into a mediocre 80 ltr job with the resultant more frequent fuel stops! Previous cars:
S-Max 2007-2013 (only diesel I've had, good car but expensive when diesely bits go wrong, so what's the point?)
Galaxy 2001-2007
Mondeo Estate 1997-2001
Sierra Estate 1993-1997
Uno Turbo 1987 -1993
Fiesta 1984 - 1987
Fiat 127 1982 - 1984

Like Vogue, I got down to 20 in the tank on the morning I p/ex'd my old '02 for my current S/C.

I think the fuel light came on when we crossed the bridge into Wales from Bristol. I had my son and wife asking me to put more fuel in, but we still made it to Cardiff without any issue.

Normal habit is to fill-up at 1/4 full. I hate bottoming out the tank as it's just delaying a job that consumes thought. Si. <This is my name.

I'm like Bellini, prefer to not go below 1/4 if I can help it. Not since I ran out before the light came on! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Not the RR, but ran out of fuel on the A1(M) a few weeks ago in the M5!

Fuel sender failed! All sorted now.

Got my car to the dreaded 3 dashes last night. Drove it for a couple of miles with the dashes and filled her up. Only managed to put in 95ltrs which filled it to the brim. So I guess i still had approx 9ltrs left.

Interestingly the range remaining in relation to fuel left in the tank between my current TDV8 and my previous TD6 are very different. The TD6 was much more accurate as I remember getting the car down to just under 10 miles range once and when I filled her it took just over 100ltrs.

I guess its possible each car will vary and its not model specific, so I just use the range remaining differently now with my current TDV8 and tend to drive it till it reaches a much lower range remaining than I did with my previous TD6.

The best way to work out each car I guess is to fill it to the brim soon after your low fuel light comes on and see how much the tank takes, then you get an idea of how much fuel was remaining which should be a good indicator to how many miles you really did have left in the tank.

For those that run out of fuel before the tank reaches zero or close to it I would suspect that the intank fuel pump maybe on its way out. Had this happen on my TD6, initially it would run to nearly empty and I regularly squeezed in close to 100ltrs of fuel, but when the intank fuel pump started to fail I would have to fill up just before the low fuel warning light would come on and was only able to put in 85 to 90 ltrs. This got progressively worse and eventually I would need to fill up when ever the tank dropped below one third full.
