Distance to empty - anyone ever run out of fuel?

I have just been on a long run and because I knew where I was going I didn't program the sat nav. About 20 miles from my destination the warning came up LOW FUEL and the distance to empty came up with 50 to go. It very quickly (within about 30 miles) shot down and down until it was just dash's so I guess that means nearly empty.

I put the sat nav on to find a petrol station and guess what it was 16 miles away. I drove like a vicar with sore feet and eventually got to the station and filled up, but I must have driven 20 odd miles past when the dash's first appeared??? Anyone know what sort of factor of safety is built into this gizzmo? Anyone ever ran out of fuel?

I did over 50 miles on empty and zero range and was still running. I did have 20 litres in the boot so thought I would play fuel roulette Whistle
When I filled the tank, I got 94 litres into the tank which is claimed to hold 104. So not too accurate. TDV8 Vogue SE 2009.

Coming back through mid France when I was sleeping and the then Mrs RRUK was driving she failed to act on the fuel light and the sat nav telling her we were more miles away from a fuel stop than we supposedly had in the tank.

So when I was rudely awoken we had to limp up the hard shoulder doing about 10mph for ten miles or so with the computer saying 00 miles left. the engine did cough a few times, but it soldiered on like a true Grit Brit!

We definitely wouldn't have made it to the next fuel stop but luckily NKSC went off looking for a petrol station that sold petrol cans too. We limped off to a rest stop and awaited his return with a gallon.

When the fuel went in the computer said range was 999km! Discovery 4 HSE

We kind of had a rule that whoever was driving, if it dropped below a quarter tank you had to fill it up to half full. Previously..

My TD6 ran out of diesel. Trip computer said I still had 10 miles to go. Was only 4 miles from town . Had hope to get there to fill up. Guess not

closest I have been to empty was on my way to work one morning, I ran for about 10 miles to the nearest petrol station, after the display had gone to a flat line. Was a bit too nerve racking, but it does prove that even when the fuel light comes on there is not really any reason to panic.... Shocked Shocked Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

i have lpg, and though i dont get an audible warning thats its nearly out, and the guage is a litttle, 'vague' with just 5 led's. i can rest assured that when i get a little flat spot when putting foot down, i can just flick the switch, and use my 50 or so litres reserve tank, of double-priced 'posh' petrol.
On my old rangie with lpg, it used to have a beeeeeep noise telling you it had auto-changed, but this prinz system on the bmw 4.4 doesnt seem to auto-change. i cant really moan, as i shouldn't let it go that far down, but whilst on a motorway, i hate to pull in for fuel, (-with LPG being a bit harder to discover, en route.) not because i hate filling it up on a motorway, i just have to buy everyone a load of snacks/coffee/mags/sweets adding another £20 easily to the fuel bill! hurrumph!

When I had a TD6 I was always putting 100l in it because thats all our nearest pump would allow and my distance to empty would show 12 to 16 miles to empty which is about spot on for the last 4 or so litres left. I began to trust it rather too much looking back but I always got a kick out of putting that much fuel in to my car .

On the previous petrol. with the van on the back, ran out coming up the M6 heading for Tesco fuel at Carlisle.

Had been on the dashes for about 10 miles and started to cough and splutter, managed to coast up the slip road and it stopped.

Put about 4 litres in from generator can in the back and got to Tesco, put 101 litres in to fill it.

Ian
